In a telegram addressed to the prefects, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin insisted on the prohibition of non-authorized gatherings.

The government is calling for increased severity.

A week after the announcement of the putting under cover of sixteen departments, he no longer hides his concern at the ever more worrying number of cases of coronavirus.

In a telegram sent Tuesday to all the prefects of metropolitan France and overseas, the Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin called for more firmness to enforce the restrictions, according to information from RTL.

The minister calls for their "strict application", and particularly insists on the prohibition of gatherings of more than six people outside.

In this note, he writes that “gatherings on public roads (…) must not exceed 6 people while respecting barrier gestures.

Gatherings of more than 6 people must be fined ”.

The injunction applies to the entire territory, and not only in the sixteen departments subject to increased restrictions.

However, it does not apply to demonstrations, funerals or professional meetings.

This ban has actually existed since the second confinement and the decree of October 29, 2020, but the government had not particularly insisted on this point.

According to RTL, the note thus asks the prefects to “communicate” more about this “essential rule to each of our fellow citizens”.

In addition, Gérald Darmanin also demands from the prefects a reinforced control of the curfew "with the prospect of the coming time change which may cause our fellow citizens to delay their return home", and an increased fight against the establishments "which open clandestinely ”.

Finally, the carnival of Marseille, in which thousands of people participated without authorization, will have left traces: in the note, the Minister of the Interior invites the police to pay "particular attention to the forecasts of demonstrations 'non-protest' ”on the public highway, for which the prefects must“ consider the ban as soon as the legal criteria are met ”.
