Myanmar security forces shot dead yesterday (Tuesday) a seven-year-old girl, Chin Miu Chit, in the city of Mandalay.
This is the youngest victim in the army's bloody struggle against civilian resistance to the coup.
The young girl was killed in her home during a military raid, according to the Political Prisoners' Aid Organization (AAPP) and the Reuters news agency.
The girl was shot while sitting on her father's lap, after security forces kicked in the door of the family home.
Soldiers asked the father if all the family members were present at the house, and when the father said yes, they accused him of lying and shot at him, hitting the young Chit whoever was there.
The ruthless killing of a child in her father's arms befits a pattern of abuse and indiscriminate use of deadly violence by Myanmar security forces, aimed not only at protesters and unarmed opponents of the coup, but also at passers-by, civilians in their homes and children.
Meanwhile, the army released hundreds of prisoners arrested while acting against the opponents of the coup.
A number of buses in which prisoners were observed are leaving the infamous "Insein" prison in Yangon City.
Although no announcement was made by the authorities about the number of those released.
