Summary.
Each year, 3 million animals such as calves or sheep are exported by the European Union, mainly to the Middle East to be slaughtered and eaten.
If there are European laws to respect animal welfare during these transits, NGOs regularly report abuses by certain carriers.
Since December, two cases have revived the debate on the travel conditions of these animals.
The Elbeik and the Karim Allah, two cargo ships loaded with live calves from Spain, sailed the Mediterranean for several months, without managing to sell their cargo.
At the end of their journey, the hungry and unhealthy beasts were slaughtered without being able to be eaten.
Parliamentarians want to take advantage of these publicized abuses to ask to ban the transport of all live animals.
Émilie Torgemen, journalist with the Société du Parisien service and environmental specialist, looks back on the Odyssian journey of these young cattle for Code source,.
