Beijing called on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to stop stirring up unrest in the South China Sea.
"Certain members of NATO should stop stirring up disturbances in the South China Sea," Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang as saying today.
The Chinese spokesman’s comments came as a comment on the dispatch of warships to the South China Sea by some NATO countries for the so-called "freedom of navigation" mission.
Ren said that "thanks to the concerted efforts of the countries of the region, the current situation in the South China Sea is generally stable," noting that the so-called "freedom of navigation" problem does not exist.
Ren said, "China always respects the freedom of navigation and flight in the South China Sea, which all countries enjoy in accordance with international law, but it firmly opposes any action that threatens the sovereignty and security of the countries bordering it."
