Munich - BMW is increasingly pressing the accelerator with regard to electromobility.

By the end of 2021, the group, which has made billions in profits despite Corona, will launch two electrified models.

On the one hand, there is the BMW iX3 SUV, which has been on sale in the most important car market in China for a long time and is now also being used by German dealers.

On the other hand, the market launch of the BMW iX is getting closer, the presentation of which took place at the end of 2020.

Now the premium manufacturer has revealed further details about the electric car, including the price.

It is hardly surprising that the new SUV from BMW is available for a proud sums of money. The price list for the weaker drive variant iX xDrive40 starts at 77,300 euros, but there is a charging capacity of 150 kW.

BMW iX: Electric SUV with two performance levels and a considerable range

The entry-level vehicle of the new technology flagship from BMW has an output of 240 kW / 300 PS, the battery has a capacity of over 70 kilowatt hours.

The sprint quality of the 2.5 ton vehicle is less than six seconds.

For many customers, the question of how much time owners spend at charging stations is probably more important.

The figure 80 percent is often used for visibility of the electric vehicles - the BMW iX 40 supposedly reaches this value in less than 40 minutes.

That is hardly longer than many rest stops, including the accompanying symptoms, take anyway.

The (even) more expensive version of the BMW iX xDrive50 model series is available for at least 98,000 euros, but the system output is 370 kW / 500 PS.

As a result, the battery is more powerful and generates 100 kilowatt hours.

While the optimal range of the smaller electric SUV is already decent at 400 km, you can go up to 600 km with the noble vehicle iX 50 without recharging.

That is already at the level of combustion models like the X5, compares BMW.

BMW: New platform for three different drive technologies

The heavyweight BMW iX does not really represent a step towards more sustainable (auto) mobility. However, the luxury electric car, which is controversial because of the "monster kidney", will find buyers mainly in continents such as Asia and North America.

With the BMW i4, another e-model will be launched this summer, which should be much more interesting for fans in Germany.

On the other hand, there was a withdrawal from the planned new entry-level electric model.

An important decision with regard to the sister brand Mini could play a role here.

However, BMW will not ignore the further development of internal combustion engines in the future either, the manufacturer affirmed.

This attitude is not unwise: Several examples show that the new generation of diesel engines definitely have potential for reducing emissions and driving range - including a BMW 7 Series that we reported on.

In addition to e-mobility and combustion engines (with hybrid drives), the new platform planned for 2025 should also enable hydrogen technology, announced CEO Oliver Zipse.

New BMW electric car: the next level of autonomous driving has not yet ignited

Two interesting aspects arise with regard to the inner workings of the BMW innovation iX: On the one hand, the next generation of the iDrive infotainment system should be mentioned, which outsources even more data than before to the virtual cloud in order to cope with the increased requirements in terms of connectivity.

Various online services are to be continuously exchanged and provide passengers with an innovative driving experience with a high level of safety.

For this purpose, functions such as routing and air conditioning are automatically individualized.

And what about the topic of autonomous driving?

A 5G modem is used to lift the digital components, while automated driving functions facilitate certain processes.

However, contrary to original plans, autonomous driving according to level 3 is not used.

This suggests that car manufacturers are struggling to implement this technology, which has been praised as future-oriented.

Not to mention safety and liability concerns.
