Reutte / Füssen - An incident at a Corona border control on March 9th made big waves all over Austria.

An ambulance of the Austrian Red Cross - with a 77-year-old heart patient on board - was stopped at the border between the Tyrolean Ausserfern and Bavaria (Füssen) by officers of the German border police *.

The patient was to be transferred from the Reutter Hospital to the Füssen Heart Clinic for an examination.

For the ambulance, however, it did not go any further at the border.

Corona border control: patient had to go to a German heart clinic for an examination from Austria

According to Dominic Geißler, spokesman for the Swabian South / West Police Headquarters, the reason for the unplanned stop was primarily the driver's lack of negative Corona * test evidence.

However, the managing director of the Reutter Red Cross, Andreas Inwinkl, says that all inmates had a negative corona test *.

“I sometimes test my employees myself,” he says.

In addition, and on this point, the police and the Red Cross agree that there was no certificate that ambulances are allowed to pass border controls.

Inwinkl explains to

: "We had to bring an ambulance to the workshop, so another one from Ehrwald was used that did not have this wipe in it."

The ambulance had to wait half an hour before a colleague could bring the document.

This incident made waves in Austria.

Politicians also publicly condemned the actions of the Bavarian border police in this case.

The media pounced on the subject.

And Inwinkl is also indignant over the long term.

"Even if this certificate was missing, you can still see with common sense that it was an ambulance from us," he says.

The managing director describes the behavior of the Bavarian officials as "absolute madness".

When asked by our editorial team, he said that "if in doubt, the whole thing could have ended badly for the patient."

Red Cross managing director outraged by the actions of the Bavarian border police

Police spokesman Geissler defends the actions of his colleagues: "The driver did not tell the officers on site in any sentence that it was an emergency." At this point in time there was never any mention of an emergency.

It was a move for an investigation.

“In a life-threatening situation, the ambulance would of course have been allowed to cross the border,” Geißler insists.

The 77-year-old was transferred to another clinic for a cardiac catheter examination.

It was only afterwards that it became apparent that the patient needed a new stent.

Since, according to the RK managing director, the man was in a "stable" condition at the time of the transport, the paramedics refrained from using flashing lights.

"Even that doesn't exactly signal to the police officers at the border that the situation is life-threatening," emphasizes Geißler.

According to Inwinkl, the patient has now been given a stant and even a cardiac pacemaker.

Police spokesman Geissler remains that the officers on site are not to be blamed for the combination of the missing emergency signals, no mention of an emergency by the paramedics, the missing certificate or the missing corona test certificate.

“Whether we like the border controls in general or not, that is currently the task of the border police in fighting pandemics.

A paramedic can also carry the virus across the border ”.

In addition, he draws attention to the fact that at the time of the incident Tyrol was classified as a "mutation area".

"The police on site have adhered to the applicable resolutions and regulations." In addition, he could not understand the actions of the Austrian media, because "nobody reported to the responsible police station before reporting on the incident."
