More than 4.6 million Israelis have so far received two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, according to statistics from the Israeli Ministry of Health released Thursday.

This represents half of the population while the country has been carrying out the most intense vaccination campaign in the world since the end of December and has gradually emerged from its third confinement in early February.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had reached an agreement with US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer allowing Israel to quickly obtain millions of doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in exchange for biomedical data on its effects.

Since then, the rate of contamination of the population has steadily declined.

It stood at 1.1% on Thursday, against nearly 6% at the end of February, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health.

West Bank injection campaign begins

For its part, the Palestinian Authority began last week vaccinating people over 75 and some patients in the occupied West Bank, a few days after receiving a first batch of vaccines via the Covax device intended for disadvantaged regions. .

The vaccination campaign in the occupied West Bank has so far been limited to medical personnel.

The Palestinian Authority is also awaiting delivery of 100,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.

In the Gaza Strip, more than 20,000 of the 60,000 doses of the Covax device were transferred last week.

Some Gazans had already been able to get vaccinated after the delivery of some 60,000 doses of Russian vaccine Sputnik V from the United Arab Emirates.

The shipment had been claimed by Mohammed Dahlane, a dissident of the Palestinian Fatah movement in exile in the Emirates, who had become an advisor to the Emirati crown prince.

The Hebrew state recently vaccinated more than 100,000 Palestinians working in Israel or settlements in the West Bank and had promised 5,000 doses to the Palestinians.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has identified nearly 170,088 sick in the occupied West Bank, including 1,910 deaths.

In the Gaza Strip, 60,848 infected people have been officially detected, including 593 deaths.
