Covid-19 in Paris: faced with the outbreak of the epidemic, change of strategy in schools

2021-03-25T21:37:22.714Z

At the beginning of the month, the protocol established between the town hall, the Rectorate and the ARS planned to test around twenty establishments at intervals

In one week, the number of closed classes doubled in Paris.

This is the observation made Wednesday evening during a meeting between the city, the Rectorate and the Regional Health Agency.

In the capital, last week, the incidence rate of confirmed cases among 10/19 year olds was 684.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants while the incidence rate for the Parisian population of all ages was 522, 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

"The figures are so carried away in schools that we can no longer even have a precise rise," worries Anne Souyris, the deputy (EELV) to the mayor of Paris in charge of Health.

"The Rectorate announced to us that it had hired 20 teachers to make replacements", explains the elected representative, while on Wednesday evening during a meeting, the Rectorate announced that 116 primary teachers were positive over the last 7 days and 94 were "contact cases".

Faced with the outbreak of the epidemic and the all-out circulation of the virus in schools, the strategy established around saliva tests at the beginning of March will be reviewed "from next Monday", specifies the Rectorate.

Respond faster to positive cases in schools

"The idea is to be much more responsive", explains in the entourage of Patrick Bloche deputy (PS) in charge of Education at the City of Paris.

From now on, there is no longer any question of following to the letter the timetable established to monitor the 25 "sentinel schools" supposed to keep the authorities informed on the progress of the epidemic.

"We are going to shift our strengths and send screening teams to schools where several positive cases are declared," explains one at the Town Hall.

The town hall is also considering a device to collect upstream the consent of the parents of students without waiting for a screening operation to be decreed.

“This operation sometimes takes time and slows down interventions.

By having obtained the consent of all the parents, we will be able to intervene more quickly, ”argues Patrick Bloche's office.

The ARS and the National Education are also working with the mayor of Paris to improve the transmission of test results to the doctors of the National Education in order to be able to quickly take the necessary measures with the students and staff who have rubbed shoulders with people who tested positive.

Very worried parents

In the meantime, among the parents of the students, concern and incomprehension reign.

“There are several positive cases declared in kindergarten and yet the ARS is not closing the school.

Even the director recommends that we keep our children at home, ”relates a mother from kindergarten Carnot in the 12th century.

In the 17th century, at the nursery school on rue des Renaudes where two classes were closed last week, a saliva screening was organized on Tuesday.

Since Thursday, 6 out of 10 classes have been closed but the establishment remains open.

"No decision of the ARS has been taken at this stage," notes Geoffroy Boulard, the mayor (LR) of the 17th century.

“It is very difficult to understand the protocol of the ARS.

They tell us that they are doing it on a case-by-case basis.

I rather have the impression that they are applying the protocol of reality: when they no longer have enough teachers, they close the school, ”regrets Anne Souyris, Ms. Health at the mayor of Paris.
