The questioned president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said this Wednesday that no vaccine will enter the country that has not been approved by national scientific institutions.

"We are not going to bring any vaccine that is causing havoc in the world, I am not going to name any, only scientifically proven vaccines will come in Venezuela that are safe for our people," said Maduro.

Earlier, the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, had again ruled out the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Venezuela as part of a decision that, she assured, had already been communicated on March 15 to the representative of the Pan American Health Organization ( PAHO), Paolo Balladelli.

The statements of Maduro and Rodríguez regarding the product of the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca are known while the European Union leaves behind two weeks of controversy that began when about 25 cases of people who suffered clots after receiving this vaccine were reported.

After analyzing the situation, the European Medicines Agency concluded that the vaccine is safe and that the benefits of its use far outweigh the risks when comparing the cases reported against more than 20 million people inoculated with this product in the EU and the Kingdom. United.

These statements also come a day after Ciro Ugarte, director of the PAHO Health Emergencies Department, reported that the payment of the US $ 18 million that Venezuela must disburse to access the vaccines of the Covax mechanism is already underway. .

Ugarte explained that the AstraZeneca vaccines produced in South Korea are planned for Venezuela, that is, "not those that have presented potential adverse effects that have been clarified by the regulatory authority in Europe and also by the World Health Organization."

The WHO Covax mechanism distributes vaccines that have received their authorization for emergency use and that at the same time have available for allocation among recipient countries.

WHO only allocates to Covax the vaccines authorized by the agency, which until now are Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna, as well as those from AstraZeneca, including those manufactured in South Korea by SKBio and in India by the Serum Institute (also known as Covishield).

Ugarte added that after that initial payment, it is necessary to confirm that there are sufficient funds, around an additional US $ 100 million, to complete the rest of the vaccines.

Ugarte explained that there are around 2.4 million vaccines that would arrive as payment is made and then the granting of the vaccines in the next round of allocation for the countries.

The opposition led by Juan Guaidó and the Maduro government agreed through a negotiation table that has been in session since February 11 to facilitate access to vaccines by releasing funds frozen abroad as part of the sanctions against Venezuelan officials and public bodies such as the Central Bank of Venezuela.

In this context, some of the politicians who made up the National Assembly elected in 2015 and who today make up the so-called Delegate Commission, approved last Friday to allocate US $ 30.3 million to buy from Covax at least 12 million doses destined for immunization of six million people.

That total includes about $ 18.2 million for Covax vaccines and just over $ 12.1 million for cold chain equipment.

The agreement contemplates that the management and distribution of vaccines is in charge of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Unicef.

The diplomatic representatives of Juan Guaidó in the United States are in charge of the management with the authorities of that country, said in a statement Carlos Vecchio, ambassador appointed by Guaidó, whom Washington recognizes as president in charge of Venezuela and therefore the interlocutor for resolve the management of those resources.

The US and other countries based the freezing of funds on the grounds that these state agencies have violated human rights and acted to undermine democracy.

Maduro and his officials reject the accusations and consider that these measures constitute a blockade that prevents Venezuela from accessing resources to fight covid-19 and, in particular, obtaining vaccines.
