OPINION | Second round in Ecuador: everyone has an incentive to stop Correa from getting away with it | CNN

In the elections in Ecuador today it seems that Andrés Arauz, the candidate chosen by Rafael Correa, will win, but it is not known with total certainty. The second and last electoral round will be on April 11. There are surveys for all tastes. His opponent is Guillermo Lasso, a banker (Banco Guayaquil) who started out as a poor man, very Catholic, a member of Opus Dei, in a country where the banking sector does not have a very good press, although Lasso's financial institution has not been tainted by no scandal and it is popularly recognized that he "made himself." | Opinion | CNN

In the elections in Ecuador today it seems that Andrés Arauz, the candidate chosen by Rafael Correa, will win, but it is not known with total certainty.

The second and last electoral round will be on April 11.

There are surveys for all tastes.

His opponent is Guillermo Lasso, a banker (Banco Guayaquil) who started out as a poor man, very Catholic, a member of Opus Dei, in a country where the banking sector does not have a very good press, although Lasso's financial institution has not been tainted by no scandal and it is popularly recognized that he "made himself."

Arauz is a young man who is part of the upper middle class.

He studied at the University of Michigan, in the United States, and also lived in Russia, where he learned to play the piano.

He is gifted at learning languages.

He speaks English much better than Rafael Correa.

He is only 36 years old.

He was born in Ecuador in 1985. At that time, Mijaíl Gorbachev came to power in the former USSR, and the second term of Ronald Reagan in the US was passing Arauz presided over the Coordinating Ministry of Knowledge and Human Talent until Lenín Moreno dissolved that monstrosity , I suspect that for not understanding what he was doing, except spending taxpayer money to the treasury.

Andrés Arauz did not experience, then, the Cold War, nor the anguish of living in a country harassed by Havana.

The head of the Cuban intelligence services in Ecuador, officer Enrique García, trained in Moscow, deserted in 1989, precisely in Quito, and told me the level of rottenness of the Ecuadorian political class.

According to García, almost all the major parties, except the Social Christians, had at some point received help from Havana.

This explains the ideological confusion that reigns in a country that can vote for Abdalá Bucaram, who was called "Crazy Bucaram" for his eccentricities, or for a person selected by Rafael Correa, standard-bearer of "Socialism of the XXI century", who is in the antipodes of the character.

There are two main voters who can give the victory to Guillermo Lasso.

The first of them is Yaku Pérez, an enlightened indigenous person, with a doctorate in Law, who lost the first electoral round by 0.35%: 19.39% of the voters voted for Pérez.

Pérez did not accept the tight result against Lasso (19.74%) and came out to denounce an alleged fraud.

For now, he has asked his supporters not to vote for Arauz or Lasso, but that order could be revoked.

The other is businessman Xavier Hervas of the Democratic Left, who lost the first round on February 7 after obtaining a total of 15.68% of the votes cast.

If you add the votes of Lasso, Pérez and Hervas - who has already said that he personally supports Lasso - you get a total of more than 54%, but in politics two and two do not add up to four.

However, they all have an incentive to prevent Correa from getting away with it: to prevent his people from ruling for 50 years, as Arauz has recklessly said and a journalist and politician, Carlos Vera, has timely reflected on his Twitter account.

Neither Yaku Pérez, nor Xavier Hervas, and much less Guillermo Lasso, is interested in having the same face installed in the Carondelet Palace for half a century.
