(CNN Spanish) ––

Fedecámaras, the organization that groups private companies in Venezuela, presented a vaccination plan for the sector this Thursday at a press conference.

According to the group, the initial goal would be 6 million doses for 3 million people and would be implemented with the support of about 100 private clinics in a period of four and a half months.

Ricardo Cussano, the organization's president, specified that under this plan, private sector workers and their families would be inoculated free of charge "and well monitored."

It is also expected to allocate 20% of the doses to the most vulnerable population "following the guidelines of the National Executive."

He also assured that it is not "a marketing plan."

On the contrary, he argued that they are moved by the desire to help Venezuelans "to the human right to access vaccines."

Cussano did not elaborate on the plan, which, he said, they worked on for three months.

He also shared that they had the support of the Academy of Sciences, the United Doctors civil association, the Epidemiology Network, the Association of Private Clinics of Venezuela and representatives of the Catholic Church.

Although he did say that they sent the proposal to the Executive and Legislative powers.

This "for your review and approval."

Nor did he clarify how the private sector will pay and have access to vaccines.

CNN asked the Ministry of Communication and Information if it is aware of this proposal.

However, so far there has been no response.

Private Sector Vaccination Initiative in Venezuela

The announcement was made weeks after a publicized meeting between the Fedecamaras board of directors and Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, controlled by the ruling party and not recognized by the majority of the opposition or by the governments that support Juan Guaidó as interim president. from Venezuela.

On February 17, at a press conference, the questioned President Nicolás Maduro had expressed that he is not opposed to the private sector operating the vaccination against covid-19 in Venezuela.

"It could be, in the middle of the battle against sanctions, it would not be bad," said the president when answering a question from a journalist.

This week, Maduro announced that he will not allow the application in the country of the AstraZeneca vaccine, although without naming it.

As he said, due to the cases of blood clots that have been reported in Europe after its application.

The government reiterated its decision when the representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Ciro Ugarte announced that 2.4 million doses of AstraZeneca had been reserved for him through the Covax mechanism.

Ugarte said that these vaccines are manufactured in South Korea, on which no cases of clots have been reported.

The European Medicines Agency, for its part, declared last week that after an investigation of the cases it concluded that the vaccine is safe.

In that sense, the entity said, the benefits outweigh the risks.

As it arises from comparing the 25 reported cases of clots among 20 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca in the European Union and in Great Britain, he pointed out.

Facilitate access to vaccines

The opposition led by Juan Guaidó and the Maduro government agreed through a negotiating table that has been in session since February 11 to facilitate access to vaccination in Venezuela.

This through the release of funds frozen abroad as part of the sanctions against Venezuelan officials and public bodies such as the Central Bank of Venezuela.

In this context, some of the politicians who made up the National Assembly elected in 2015, and who today make up the so-called Delegate Commission, approved last Friday to allocate US $ 30.3 million to buy at least 12 million doses to immunize six million of persons.

That total includes about $ 18.2 million for Covax vaccines.

And just over US $ 12.1 million for cold chain equipment.

The agreement establishes that the management and distribution of the vaccines is in charge of PAHO and Unicef.

The diplomatic representatives of Juan Guaidó in the United States are in charge of the management with the authorities of that country, Ambassador Carlos Vecchio said in a statement.

Freezing of funds

The US and other countries based the freezing of funds on the grounds that these state agencies have violated human rights and acted to undermine democracy.

Maduro and his officials reject the accusations.

In that sense, they consider that these measures constitute a blockade that prevents Venezuela's access to resources to fight covid-19.

In particular, to obtain vaccines.

So far the Executive has reported on the entry into the country of 200,000 doses of Russian Sputnik-V vaccines and 500,000 Chinese vaccines.

According to the latest census, Venezuela has a population of close to 30 million inhabitants.

Maduro has said that a massive vaccination phase is expected in the country in April.

But, an immunization dose arrival schedule has not been made public.

Details of the implementation of the vaccination plan under development have not been publicly reported either.
