Former Tamaulipas Governor Tomás Yarrington has pleaded guilty to money laundering in the US, the Justice Department said.

Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba, former governor of Tamaulipas, pleaded guilty to money laundering in a court in the southern district of Texas this Thursday, the United States Department of Justice said in a statement.

Yarrington Ruvalcaba accepted that he received more than US $ 3.5 million in bribes that were used to fraudulently buy properties in this country, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

"As part of the guilty plea, Yarrington admitted that he accepted bribes from individuals and private companies in Mexico to do business with the state of Tamaulipas, while he was serving as governor," the Justice Department statement explained.

According to the authorities, the former governor also agreed to hand over one of the properties under investigation.

Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba, who was a candidate for the Mexican presidency in 2005, faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The date of the hearing for his sentence has not been set.

The 64-year-old Mexican politician was arrested in April 2017 in Italy.

A year later, the Italian police extradited him to the United States.

The US authorities had been looking for the official since May 2013. He was charged with organized crime and money laundering.
