2021-03-26T05:33:23.692Z

Roselyne Bachelot, Minister of Culture, announces exclusively to our newspaper: she has decided to present the candidacy of the bag

Will the baguette soon become part of Unesco's intangible cultural heritage?

In any case, the most famous French bread in the world has taken a crucial step this Thursday: France has chosen to apply for membership in Unesco.

Although hospitalized for two days because of Covid-19, Roselyne Bachelot, the Minister of Culture, announces to us exclusively: “The baguette is a living element of our heritage!

Alive but fragile because it is based on the exceptional know-how of the craftsmen, and their commitment to this so beautiful but so demanding work.

The baguette is a noble and deceptively simple product, it takes years, from a few ingredients, to find its signature ... its touch!

This product unites us and it is for this reason that I chose it. "

The Ministry of Culture has until March 31 to submit the file to the “secretariat of the Unesco living heritage entity” in Paris.

However, the game is not yet settled: the decision rests with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which will not be pronounced before the fall of 2022.

Zinc roofers beaten to the wire

Nevertheless: in the race for the intangible heritage of Unesco which only takes place every two years, the bakers have just grilled politeness to the Parisian roofers.

It is indeed among these two corporations that the Minister of Culture had to choose who would represent France in 2021 to try to obtain the famous label.

Officially, the art of repairing and restoring the roofs of Paris in zinc was in the running alongside "artisanal know-how and the culture of the baguette" and also the Biou d'Arbois, a traditional wine festival which, from after the observers, did not have much chance of winning.

"250 g of perfection and magic."

These are the words used by Emmanuel Macron to qualify the baguette / LP / Olivier Corsan

Rue de Valois, we do not hide that “the match was close.

With regard to the requirements of the 2003 convention on intangible heritage, the experts leaned more towards the know-how of roofers.

The baton did not win until the last lap. ”

Craftsmanship, a very French know-how

It is true that the baguette, an appellation that appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in Paris to designate a long loaf, did not obtain a favorable opinion from the Committee for Intangible Ethnological Heritage (CPEI, a French body made up of elected officials, academics, etc. ) for this candidacy until February 12.

But the art of restoring zinc roofs suffered from a major flaw, that of being, by definition, "too Parisian", according to the Ministry of Culture.

The bakers had a master asset: the support of Emmanuel Macron

In their game, the bakers also had a master asset in the person of the President of the Republic, necessarily consulted by the Minister of Culture.

On January 13, 2021, during the reception of the master bakers at the Elysee Palace, who came to offer the Epiphany cake, Emmanuel Macron praised “a know-how that irrigates our country, all our territories”.

The Head of State had even declared: "Yes, I will defend and present the French baguette to Unesco because I believe in it (...) The baguette, we will offer it with all its characteristics and its 250 g of perfection and magic. ”
