Warming for cooling:
US President Joe Biden announced tonight (Friday) that he intends to hold a global summit, attended by 40 leaders from around the world, with the aim of fighting global warming.
Among those invited to the summit is also Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In addition to the prime minister, the US president invited to the summit, which will be held virtually due to the corona crisis, also other leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi King Salman.
In his invitation, Biden noted the importance of the fight against global warming, and set 2030 as the target year.
The president also reiterated his commitment to prevent global warming by more than a mile and a half (on the Celsius scale), a warming that many scientists say could lead to changes in the planet's ability to sustain life in large areas.
In 2018, a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of the dangers of warming, citing 2030 as the test year and the target of a temperature and a half as the danger. Especially and an increase in sea level.
For many parts of the world, the drought will be worse than extreme rains, "writes Andrew King, a professor of climate science at the University of Melbourne.
"The 'window' of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius is rapidly closing. Even the current commitments to reduce gas emissions by the countries that signed the Paris Agreement will not help us achieve that goal," King added.
