The Taufkirchen prehistoric museum has a new department, rare exhibits and new residents of the dinosaur garden to offer.

It is open again - for registered visitors.

Taufkirchen

- The corona policy is grueling, also for Peter Kapustin, the founder and head of the Taufkirchen prehistoric museum.

He is currently again able to welcome visitors who have to register with him online in advance, as far as the incidence value allows.

The 37-year-old, who is the managing director of the German Athletics Association, describes himself as an optimist, but admits that he is already frustrated because of the closings ordered by the legislator.

He and his team used the lockdowns to renew, add to and change some things in the prehistoric museum.

Newly designed entrance area with children's corner

It starts right away in the newly designed entrance area with a children's corner and cloakroom.

The new, large tour begins here.

The passionate fossil collector and father of two sons, who has been a passionate fossil collector since he was five, always has plenty of ideas.

He has currently implemented the “Germany 500,000 Years Ago” department.

Enthusiastic, as is typical for him, he tells what there is to discover.

“The finds that come from Wiesbaden are something very special.

They are from the last warm period, which was within the Ice Age. ”At that time it was warmer here than it is today, and animals that are actually more familiar from Africa lived in our latitudes.

He is proud of a 70 centimeter long tusk, the canine of a hippopotamus, “It's gigantic.

I've never seen anything like it. ”A scientific highlight in the room is the partial skeleton of an elephant.

“The forearm alone is a meter long.

If you did it all out, it would be the size of a dinosaur. ”A giant elk skull, which he estimates to be a million years old, can also be discovered in the illuminated display case.

The skeletal parts slumbered in the basement of a collector.

With a lot of persuasion and in exchange for a rhinoceros skull, he received this find.

A lot has also changed in the marine department, in the Solnhofner area and in the black slate.

Walls were moved, redesigned by painter Romy, a breakthrough made and an aquarium built in.

During the Christmas holidays Kapustin built a model of an ancient crocodile, of which there are very few.

The matching bone find lies underneath in the display case.

In addition, other ammonites, fish, turtles or a Mosasaurus skull with really sharp teeth were added.

New giant vortex in the Dino-Hallo

The tour continues up to the dinosaur hall, where there is, for example, a new, huge vertebra of a brachiosaurus to be admired, and in the dinosaur garden some new life-size models, some with offspring, are waiting for visitors.

"I try to make the best possible use of the space," emphasizes Kapustin.

That is also necessary.

The museum now has over 30 lifelike models from very small to twelve meters tall and at least 15, some of them original, skeletons.

Even without Corona, a huge renovation with complete assemblies was planned for this winter.

"That will come when everything goes back to normal and we have some money again," reveals Kapustin.

The affected department must be closed for at least two months, which would have been ideal during Corona.

With 2000 square meters of exhibition space, he can currently let 50 visitors into the museum, who would have to be spread across the site.

A family ticket costs 20 euros.
