The country's military commander, Min Oung Heling, returned at the end of a military parade to mark Armed Forces Day on his promise to hold elections, but did not specify when.

"The military wants to march hand in hand with all parts of the people, to preserve democracy," he said, adding that the military is interested in protecting civilians and maintaining peace relations across the country.

He condemned the "demands of the protesters, which lead to violent actions that undermine security and stability."

Last night in the official television channel broadcasts in the country, a warning was issued calling on protesters not to take to the streets and learn from previous cases.

"The protesters could be injured like people who lost their lives in previous demonstrations," a statement warned of "a shot to the head or back."

The warning did not say that the army had received orders to shoot the protesters, while in the junta there were claims that the shots actually came from the crowd of protesters.

However, the statement said the army's intention to maintain order in the Armed Forces Day celebrations, marking the beginning of resistance to the Japanese occupation in 1945, commanded by the father of detained leader Aung San Suu Chi.

"They shoot at us like ducks at a range, even in our homes," a Mingyan resident said, "but we will continue to protest. We will continue to fight until the junta falls."

The EU has strongly condemned the bloodbath.

"The 76th Day of the Armed Forces will forever be remembered as a day of terror. The killing of unarmed civilians, including children, is an act for which there can be no justification."

Demonstrators take to the streets almost daily since the coup stopped the slow transition of Myanmar to democracy. According to data provided by the Working Group The Political Prisoners' Association (AAPP) estimates that about a quarter of the demonstrators killed died from gunshot wounds to the head, which raised the suspicion of deliberate killing.
