The ship stuck in the Suez Canal moved slightly today (Saturday) due to the rescue efforts, but it is not yet clear when it will be possible to completely evacuate it from the shipping lane - according to the director of the authority responsible for managing the canal, Osama Rabi.

According to estimates by those involved in the rescue of the ship, there is a chance that the complex mission will be completed as early as the beginning of the week.

The ship, Ever Given, which is 400 meters long, has been stuck at a diagonal angle in the busy shipping lane since Tuesday, producing a sea traffic jam that disrupts the movement of ships and delays many shipments of goods.

Rabi said he hoped there would be no need to take out some of the 18,000 containers on board, thus easing its weight and rescue efforts, but argued that the strong tides were complicating efforts to release it.

"The stern of the ship began to move in the direction of Suez, and it was a positive sign until the night, but then the tide stopped significantly and we stopped," Rabbi explained at a press conference.

"We expect that at all times the ship will slip and leave where it is."

The Suez Canal Authority said this week that it would require the removal of 20-15 thousand meters of sand to reach a depth of 16-12 meters and return the ship to the water.

At the same time as efforts are being made to crush the surrounding rocks, attempts are being made to lift and re-flood the ship.
