Ventilate instead of filtering

No air purification devices are purchased for the classrooms at the Finsing School.

This decision was made in the school association meeting of the middle school association.

Association councils as well as school management agreed: It is better to continue ventilating, because that is not omitted even with air filters - just like the mask requirement for the students.

Finsing - The topic of air purification devices is currently being discussed intensively, said Finsing's mayor and chairman of the school association, Max Kressirer.

That is why he has been in contact with the school management for a long time, also because the topic is repeatedly raised by parents.

Kressirer explained that for rooms without ventilation - "and we have exactly one of them at the school" - two filter devices have been purchased.

In addition, there are another 40 rooms at the school.

According to Kressirer, you need two devices per room.

If you calculate with unit costs of around 2,000 euros, that makes a total of 160,000 euros.

A possible funding would amount to 50 percent.

In addition, however, there would be annual follow-up costs for new filters and maintenance of around 80,000 euros.

Regardless of the costs, Kressirer raised the question of whether it would be technically possible to run so many devices at the same time.

The mayor cited a similar case from Wartenberg: As reported, they had spoken out against the purchase of air filter devices, among other things because the power supply was insufficient.

Ventilating regularly is the “cheapest and most effective solution,” says Kressirer.

Markus Sedlmeir (Neuching) followed suit.

“It is not at all clear whether the devices will even achieve the desired effect.

And you still have to ventilate, ”he said.

Many parents who demand air purifiers are not even aware of this, reported Christian Nagler (Moosinning) from discussions with parents' councils.

Julia Manu (Finsing), who is a teacher herself, reported from her experience that the ventilation “actually works quite well”.

She suspected that for many parents, the main question behind the requirement for air filters was how to prevent the children from having to wear masks in class.

"But we will probably not be able to do without the masks even with these ventilation devices, that has to be clear to us," said Manu, who emphasized that the teachers would pay attention to regular mask breaks.

“Maximum security would also be my wish, and always having school open is a must.

But the ventilation devices are not the lifeline we dream of. "

That is why you have to act very pragmatically: You can think about filters for individual rooms without ventilation options, but equip the whole school with them - “I think that's wrong”.

In addition, the ministry does not give permission to suspend the mask requirement, nor to return to full classroom teaching if air purifiers are available.

Beatrix Ertl (Neuching) said that if you buy filters, it should bring advantages for the students.

As long as that is not the case, one can do without it.

Vice-principal Antje Dürr, who is currently head of the school on a provisional basis, explained that regular shock and cross ventilation is anchored in both the general hygiene plan of the Ministry of Education and the school.

In addition, around 40 CO2 traffic lights were purchased for all rooms, including the Niederneuching school building.

All rooms except for the already mentioned OGTS room of the elementary school could be ventilated, and the windows in the corridors could also be tilted - “that's enough.

We are in the fortunate position of being able to open all the windows and doors.

I think this purchase is not necessary, ”says Dürr.

Susanne Techant, who will take over the school management in Finsing for the coming school year, also joined in.

She pointed out that the Federal Environment Agency had determined that the filters could not replace ventilation.

The purchase of such devices was ultimately rejected.
