The seven demonstrators arrested Friday in Algiers during the weekly demonstration by Hirak, an anti-regime protest movement in Algiers

They have gotten into the habit of proclaiming their anger and their desire for change every Friday for two years now.

This week again, some protesters were arrested by the police in the center of Algiers, while taking part in this anti-regime march, the Hirak ("movement", in French), bringing together several thousand people.

This Sunday, the seven demonstrators were released.

Among them were the activist Mohamed Tadjadit, nicknamed the “poet” of Hirak, and three students.

"They were all released" at the end of the afternoon, said Abdelghani Badi, one of their lawyers.

They had previously been heard by an examining magistrate from the court of Sidi Mhamed, in the center of Algiers.

A hundred supporters in court

A hundred people gathered near the court during their appearance to demand their release, according to a journalist from Agence France Presse.

“We will not leave until after the release of Abdenour Aït-Said

and Mohamed Tadjadit.

We will continue our fight until the departure of the regime in place, ”said Nadjib Khimoud, a Hirak activist.

Born in February 2019 from the massive rejection of a fifth term of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, helpless and reclusive, the Hirak calls for a radical change in the political "system" in place since the country's independence in 1962, synonymous in the eyes of protesters with corruption , nepotism and authoritarianism.

The marches resumed with a vengeance on February 22, on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of this movement, after a year of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
