The repression carried out by Burmese security forces since the coup in early February could have "
catastrophic

consequences
for the country's youth, UNICEF director Henrietta Fore warned on Sunday.
"
I am horrified by this indiscriminate killing, including children, which is taking place in Burma and the inability of the security forces to exercise restraint and ensure the safety of children,
" said Ms. Fore in a statement.

The United Nations has estimated the death toll in the crackdown on Saturday's protests at 107 people - including seven children - but expects the death toll to rise further.
Local media report 114 dead.
“Beyond the immediate impact of the violence, the long-term consequences of the crisis for the country's children could be catastrophic,
” she said.
The official pointed out that basic health services were already lacking in Burma, citing the fact that nearly one million children did not have access to vaccines and five million to vitamin A.
