Culture in need: making the best of it

Canceled events, missing income, short-time work.

A possible closure scenario was repeatedly thrown on the wall as a warning.

But there is no longer any talk of it.

The Ebersberger old cinema works as always, only without an audience in the house.

The program is simply broadcast on the Internet, which is obviously well received.

Ebersberg

- The last two evenings alone had 270 and 130 paying online guests.

“And thus almost twice as many viewers,” explains landlord Markus Bachmeier, “because several people can watch at the same time with one entrance.” A maximum of 200 guests are possible in the old cinema.

So the audience increase.

Sounds as if the Ebersberg theater operators have come to terms with the corona situation, at least arranged with it.

"It's dramatic," replies Bachmeier, "but you have to accept the circumstances and simply make the best of them."

Streaming will remain an add-on

At least there was financial support for the technology required for streaming.

Incidentally, Bachmeier does not see the end of live culture heralding this.

“Live events will pass it on.

Streaming will only remain as an add-on.

After all, we can also reach people who are not that mobile. ”However, he still makes one thing clear:“ For us, streaming doesn't mean simply filming the evening.

We do a lot more than just set up a camera. ”Before the broadcasts, for example, self-produced portraits of the artists and interviews are shown.

"That is a lot of work.

The videos have to be rotated and edited. "

The theater people learn the necessary know-how while doing it.

“Of course, professionals showed us how to do it.” Despite this digitalisation push in the old cinema, the longing for live events is unmistakable.

Bachmeier would of course like to reopen the house to his public as soon as possible.

But it still has to wait, as it currently seems.

It recently looked so promising: the corona incidence in the district was just over 30, the easing decisions made a reopening of the theater for the audience within reach.

Meanwhile, the development is going in a different direction.

Weren't there hopes?

The head of the house shakes his head: "None of us seriously expected that we would be able to reopen on March 22nd." That is why he relied on live broadcasts at all times, with the option of any of these events at short notice - should it will be possible again - to admit the audience.

“If we are allowed to reopen, it can happen very quickly.

The planned program can simply continue, only we then open the hall doors. "

Mini culture fire in Ebersberg in summer

Even if live events cannot really be planned at the moment, Bachmeier has an eye on them, not just in-house.

In summer, for example, he wants to organize a mini culture fire in the monastery building yard.

“At what period and in what form I cannot yet say.

Maybe there will be 14 days in July, possibly longer or shorter.

All of this depends on the corona situation. "

And then he still talks about the mobile stage, which, together with the Grafinger Stadthalle, the Moosacher Meta Theater, the Glonner Schrottgalerie and the Markt Schwabener Theaterverein, is to offer an open-air program this summer, in which other cultural workers can also participate .

“This county-wide campaign is a really good thing,” he emphasizes, “a solidarity project.” Although the project is not yet financially watertight, everyone is in good spirits because both politicians and various sponsors are very committed to it.

"If everything goes well, it might start in June."

What he doesn’t want to talk about yet, but it already vaguely suggests: The old cinema is planning a further digital component, the “old cinema TV”, which should go on air soon.

So if you think that the old cinema is currently orphaned, you are mistaken, it is seething there.
