In an increasingly connected world, our societies and economies are teeming with data.
Used wisely, they can be a powerful lever for development, a way to fight poverty and improve the well-being of populations, says a World Bank report.
They are now resources just like labor, capital or land.
The challenge is not to leave aside the 700 million people living in extreme poverty, insist the authors, noting that there is a lot of untapped data in less advanced economies.
“They offer enormous potential for value creation by improving programs and policies, stimulating economies and empowering citizens,
” said David Malpass, president of the multilateral institution.
Poor countries are too often disadvantaged by "
lack of institutions, decision-making autonomy and financial resources
", he continues.
