Members of a public commission for the protection of human rights in prisons have, according to their own account, visited Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny in the notorious prison camp around 100 kilometers east of Moscow.

The occasion was reports of his poor health.

Navalny had complained of severe back pain and said that he could no longer put weight on his right leg.

His lawyers and the EU expressed concern.

Only recently the opposition had complained about "torture".

Despite complaints about a lack of medical care, a Russian human rights commission sees little cause for concern.

His leg hurts, he asked for a pain medication, according to a report by the panel, from which a Russian newspaper quoted.

"He can still walk alone."

Navalny was sentenced to several years in a prison camp at the beginning of February for allegedly violating reporting requirements in previous criminal proceedings while he was recovering from the poison attack in Germany.

The judgment has been heavily criticized internationally and classified as politically motivated.

For weeks, the EU has been calling for Navalny's immediate release.
