The Federation of Nature Conservation does not understand why the crows are being called to war so massively.

Is the end of mass proliferation in sight?

Erding - No matter whether in Erding or Dorfen, the rook has blossomed into enemy number 1.

According to the official census, it continues to multiply and politicians are gradually running out of ideas to contain the populations.

In addition: every sword that the municipalities use is weak, the bird is under protection.

And even the toughest opponents have to admit to the crow: it is clever and knows how to adapt to its surroundings.

The Erding district group of the Bund Naturschutz has now intervened in the howl of war against the croaking - with moderate words.

“Of course, the rook can be quite annoying with its noise and droppings during breeding from March to May.

But doesn't that also do a lot of other things that we simply accept? ”Asks BN bird expert Sascha Alexander.

He refers, for example, to traffic noise.

He denies the unrestrained growth of the breeding pairs.

“The over-multiplication of corvids, which has been claimed or feared again and again, is demonstrably not taking place.

In many studies, they show stable stocks that by no means “grow into the sky”. According to the ornithologist, they could not do that either.

"Because every habitat can only provide quarters, breeding grounds and food for a limited number of corvids." Alexander also has good news in this regard: It is assumed that "the rooks' growth limits will soon be reached".

The big black bird was almost extinct in Bavaria in the 1950s and was only able to recover after being legally protected.

Even today, states the BN, this clever and harmless bird is still missing in Franconia and largely in Lower Bavaria.

According to Alexander, it is correct that birds are drawn to urban areas.

That too: man-made.

"Their original habitat in the open cultural landscape became less and less attractive due to the people - intensive agriculture, plowing of meadows, clearing of groups of trees and above all through hunting." Settlements, on the other hand, offered the crows a good food supply - waste, compost heaps.

And above all: protection from people.

The BN promotes greater understanding and recommends a look into the treetops: “Rooks compensate for their very social behavior with exciting presentations.

This is open-air theater without corona restrictions, ”said the ornithologist.

The building yard employees were in the treetops until March 1st - to clear nests.

Now is the breeding season, it cannot be ignored.
