Amnesty International today announced the appointment of Agnes Callamard as Secretary-General of the London-based organization.
It is noteworthy that French Callamard is a former rapporteur on extrajudicial executions or arbitrary executions at the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
French newspaper Le Monde quoted Sarah Beamish, head of Amnesty International’s international governing body, as saying in a statement that Callamard was appointed Secretary-General of the organization for a period of four years, succeeding Julie Verhar, who held this position on a temporary basis.
