  • German Unity Day commemorates the reunification of Germany in 1990.

  • All other public holidays in Germany are a matter of the country.

Munich - On October 3rd every year, all of Germany sets free, because that is the "Day of German Unity".

On this day, Germany celebrates one of the most important events in German history every year.

In contrast to some other public holidays, the Day of German Unity is a public holiday that applies under federal law.

This means that there are no differences between the federal states in this regard - all of Germany takes a day off from work or school and shops remain closed.

All other holidays are a matter for the federal states and are regulated differently depending on the federal state.

October 3rd was designated as the Day of German Unity in the Unification Treaty of 1990 as a public holiday in Germany.

Only pharmacies are allowed to open and restaurants and bars decide for themselves whether to open or not.

The Day of German Unity: What do we celebrate on this day?

The Day of German Unity is intended to commemorate German reunification.

On October 3rd, 1990, the German Democratic Republic, the GDR, joined the Federal Republic of Germany, the FRG.

Thus the federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Berlin became the new states of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Hundreds of thousands celebrated reunification in Berlin alone.

After 41 years, the divided Germany became one again.

Until 1990 June 17th was the day of German unity.

On this day, from 1954 to 1990, the Federal Republic commemorated the popular uprising in the GDR in 1953. With the reunification of Germany, October 3rd was declared the new day of German unity in the Unification Treaty.

German Unity Day: The Historical Significance of That Day

For 41 years Germany was divided into East and West Germany.

On November 9, 1989, the Wall finally fell, which not only marked the end of the division of Germany, but also the end of the GDR.

It was not until October 3, 1990, a good year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, that the unification treaty between East and West Germany came into force.

Since 1990 there has been an official celebration on October 3rd.

The festival is organized every year by the capital of the state that chairs the Federal Council.

In 2020 the Potsdam celebrations were held.

In 2021, Halle (Saale) will host the celebration of German Unity Day.
