Last year there was a new record of 740 births in the Ebersberg district clinic.

In order to take this development into account, a midwifery clinic has now been set up, which is run by freelance midwives.

We spoke to senior physician Helen Budiman, senior physician Carla Maier and the attending midwife Mandy Hilpert.

Where is the new midwifery clinic located?

Budiman:

On the former station 1.4.

next to the delivery room.

With the move of the weekly ward and the gynecology department to another part of the clinic in August 2019, the rooms became vacant.

Where the common room for the mothers with breakfast buffet used to be, there is now a waiting room, the former breastfeeding room functions as a conversation room.

We have divided the large, former examination room with a screen and redesigned it into a kind of multifunctional room.

There is, for example, a lounger for massages and an armchair for preventive medical check-ups, acupuncture or other applications.

There is also another examination room, for example for ultrasound or blood sampling, a support point for the midwives and a patient toilet.

At the moment the rooms are not quite finished, they still need some embellishment.

Are the rooms already being used?

Hilpert:

Yes, but only to a limited extent.

Here, too, our hands are tied by Corona, currently one-on-one discussions and medically necessary examinations are predominantly taking place.

In the future we would like to offer pregnant women preventive care and help with nausea, vomiting and other complaints during pregnancy, birth preparation and postnatal training courses, breastfeeding advice, early childhood support (PEKiP) and possibly baby massage.

Acupuncture and emergency consultations are also planned twice a week.

However, a lot is currently not possible due to Corona, especially the course offers, but expectant mothers can inquire about the current offers by telephone and arrange a meeting.

Soon there will also be a separate homepage for the midwifery clinic.

We hope that we can offer all services by autumn and that the rooms will be completely finished by then.

Aren't these services typically performed by freelance midwives outside of the clinic?

Maier:

That is correct, but as in the whole of Germany, there are still too few midwives in the Ebersberg district and thus a supply gap.

We don't see ourselves as competition, we want to close this gap and we also exchange ideas with external, freelance midwives.

A mother who has not found a midwife to look after her before or after the birth can, for example, take advantage of our emergency clinic during childbed.

The period is determined by the health insurance companies, usually around four to six weeks after the birth.

However, our midwives do not make house calls, all offers take place in the clinic.

What other advantages does the midwifery clinic have?

Budiman:

It

ensures

obstetrics because our full-time midwives would no longer have been able to cope with the increasing birth rates on their own.

Thanks to the midwives, we can continue to guarantee our one-to-one care.

There is always an additional midwife on site and another on call if there is a lot to do in the delivery room.

In addition, the freelance midwives can be deployed more flexibly.

While permanent employees are only allowed to provide obstetrics, the midwives cover the entire spectrum, from prenatal care to postnatal care.
