On Saturday several sights were completely in the dark.

Nuremberg

- The worldwide "Earth Hour" campaign of the WWF took place on Saturday.

Not only in Germany, but all over the world, the lights were switched off for an hour - on famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Opera in Sydney as well as in offices, houses and apartments, reports WWF in a press release.

The "hour of the earth" is thus the largest climate and environmental campaign.

This year's campaign saw a record participation on Saturday.

575 cities, including Nuremberg *, took part in the climate protection campaign.

Together with 448 companies at 716 locations, they darkened landmarks, town halls, churches, company headquarters and offices between Saturday evening, according to WWF.

In addition, there were private individuals who took part in the campaign from home.

On social media they shared pictures of the symbolic switching off of lights for a living earth under the hashtags #Lichtaus and #EarthHour.

In Nuremberg, too, they took part in the worldwide "Eath Hour".

From 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., sights in Nuremberg * such as the Kaiserburg, Lorenzkirche, the opera house and the Frauenkirche were not illuminated.

"With the Earth Hour, millions of people around the world are showing that we have to work harder against the climate crisis and for a living planet," says Marco Vollmar, Head of Communication and Campaign at WWF Germany.

The WWF is calling for the "Earth Hour" in the federal election year that the pace of the expansion of renewable energies be massively accelerated.

The share of clean energy from wind and sun must increase to 80 percent of gross electricity consumption by 2030 so that we can achieve our climate targets.
