The gray-white Tang cat "Coke" raised by a building materials company disappeared in November last year. A few days later, it was discovered that the "Coke" was suspected to have been stolen by a man.

The man was charged with theft. The case opened at West Kowloon Magistracy today (29th). The defendant in Mandarin said that he saw a cat outside the store, thinking it was a stray cat, and said that he had never thought of having a cat in Hong Kong.

The case was adjourned until April 8.

The defendant Wang Gan (43 years old, sales clerk) was accused of stealing a cat from Lai Chi Kok Road, Sham Shui Po, Wancheng Building Decoration Co., Ltd., valued at HK$3,000, as property belonging to Chen Rong on November 27, 2020.

Chen Rong, the proprietor of the building materials store, confessed that she was the owner of "Coke". She claimed that she played with "Coke" outside the store on the morning of the incident. After that, the cat stayed at the door to enjoy the sun, but she returned to the store as soon as she arrived. Two hours later, it was discovered that the cat did not return to the store to drink water. So she called her husband to find the cat together. When checking the closed-circuit television in the nearby store, she saw a tall man watching her playing with the cat. When she entered the shop, she passed outside the shop. He took it away and called the police.

Chen said that according to the CCTV footage, he disagreed with the defendant's claim that he had interacted with Maoer, but the film had been destroyed and the prosecution did not submit it to court.

A few days later, she was retrieved by the police. She said that the "Coke" had a red-yellow collar and purple bells. It had been in the shop for about 3 months, and she would not take it out normally.

The defendant did not have a legal representative. He admitted in court that he had obtained a cat outside the building materials store. He said that he had taken a bus from get off work and took the food with one hand. He thought the cat was a stray cat and anyone could play with it. Just step forward to touch it, play with it, and then take it home.

He argued that the cat ran to Nanyang Bank and he worried that the cat was run over by a car.

Under cross-examination by the defense, he noticed that the cat had a collar and a bell, and agreed that it was clean, but he did not expect that it was kept by someone.

He personally stated: "I have had a cat in the mainland, but I have never had a problem with cats in Hong Kong." He once bought cat food for cats.

Three days after the incident, the police officer conducted a raid at No. 8-10 Larch Street, Tai Kok Tsui. The police officer confessed that he heard a cat barking and a gray-white Tang cat, which was suspected to be missing, jumped out of the transom of a unit. She arrested a man for theft.
