A woman of Asian descent was attacked in New York by a man who repeatedly kicked her, while eyewitnesses who watched what was happening did nothing to stop him - according to documentation from a security camera released by police.

A 65-year-old woman was attacked yesterday (Monday) afternoon in midtown Manhattan when the assailant attacked her and kicked her in the abdomen, knocking her to the ground.

Police said the assailant stepped on the woman's face several times, hurling racist curses at her.

"You do not belong here," he told her.

In the documentation he was seen continuing on his way afterwards, when several people who were at the entrance of a building overlooking the attack did not lift a finger.

One of those people, apparently security guards, was even seen closing the door while the woman was on the floor.

The company that manages the building, the "Boardsky Organization," posted an Instagram post stating that it was aware of the attack and that the staff members who witnessed it were suspended until the investigation was completed.

The New York Police Department's anti-hate crime force is conducting the investigation, and it has asked anyone with information to contact it.

New York police said 33 hate crimes against people of Asian descent were recorded this year.

Police Chief Dermot Xia recently said the force would increase security in Asian communities following a spate of hate crimes against them across the United States since the outbreak of the corona plague.

Six women of Asian descent were among the eight victims killed this month in a shooting spree at a spa in the Atlanta area.

Police have not yet ruled out the racist motive for the shooting.

A report by Stop AAPI Hate, an organization that works against violence against Asian communities, listed more than 3,795 incidents from March 19 last year to February 28 this year.

However, the organization said those numbers "are only a fraction of the number of true hate crimes".
