"

No one can afford to take a drop of water from Egypt, otherwise the region will experience unimaginable instability

," said the president at a press conference in Ismailia, when asked about this controversial great dam.

"

No one should imagine that it is far from the reach of Egypt

", added President Sisi, stressing that the share of the waters of the Nile going to Egypt was "

a red line.

".

The Great Ethiopian Renaissance (GERD) dam, set to become Africa's largest hydroelectric facility, has been a source of tension between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia since its launch in 2011.

Egypt, which depends on the Nile for about 97% of its irrigation and drinking water, sees it as a threat to its water supply.

Tripartite negotiations with the African Union

At a conference in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Dina Mufti said Ethiopia remained in favor of tripartite negotiations in collaboration with the African Union.

Ethiopia believes that African problems can be solved by Africans themselves.

We respect African wisdom and the current negotiations (...) we hope they will be successful,

”he said.

Sisi, however, clarified that he "

did not threaten

" and that his country had "

never threatened

".

"

But our reaction in the event that we would undermine (our share of the waters of the Nile, editor's note) will affect the stability of the entire region,

" he insists.

Egypt and Sudan urged Ethiopia not to fill in until an agreement is signed.

The subject has been the subject of about a decade of discussion without any agreement being reached.

"

In the next few weeks there will be negotiations and I hope we will reach a binding legal agreement

," President Sisi said.
