Dangerous gases in the Silbersee force the city of Nuremberg to take drastic measures: there is already a bathing ban and, soon, boating too.
Nuremberg
- Soon, boats and other floating bodies will be banned on the Silbersee in the Volkspark Dutzendteich area, as the city of Nuremberg * announced in a press release.
Bathing in the water enriched with toxic hydrogen sulfide has long been banned.
Gypsum, so-called calcium sulfate, seeps into the groundwater from an excavation near the Silbersee, which is used as a dump for rubble.
The result: The sulphate contained dissolves and, if there is a lack of oxygen in the water, it reacts to form toxic hydrogen sulphide, which preferably accumulates within three to four meters.
If you mix up the water layers - for example because you are swimming in the lake - it rises.
Nuremberg: Swimming in the Silbersee can lead to death - even boating too dangerous
If a person comes into contact with it, it can have fatal consequences.
If swimmers inhale the substance, they can pass out and drown.
For this reason, bathing in the Silbersee has been prohibited since the early 1960s.
But the danger is not just for swimmers.
Even if people drive on the Silbersee with boats and other small vehicles, this can have a bad end.
The city of Nuremberg * is therefore pulling the rip cord: From April 15, 2021, in addition to the bathing ban, the lake may no longer be navigated.
