The National People's Congress passed the decision to "improve Hong Kong's electoral system" earlier. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress today (30th) approved amendments to Annex 1 and Annex 2 of the Basic Law to drastically revise the method for selecting the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council.
Among them, the next term of the Legislative Council will increase to 90 seats, the specific distribution of seats is "432", the Election Committee will occupy 40 seats, the functional constituency will occupy 30 seats, and the direct election will be greatly reduced to 20 seats. The candidates for the Legislative Council must be in the five major sectors. Don’t get 2 to 4 nomination votes each.
After the restructuring, the threshold for the democrats to participate in elections will be greatly increased. Earlier, it was rumored that members of the pan-democratic parties had greatly reduced their intention to run for the Legislative Council, but many parties have not made a formal decision.
The Democratic Party chairman Luo Jianxi said that whether or not the party members of the Democratic Party will participate in the election will be discussed, but he frankly said that the amendment of the system has reduced the willingness of party members to participate in the election.
