Cairo-Sana

The Suez Canal Authority expected the passage of 140 ships today after the floatation of a container ship that ran aground in the canal for nearly a week allowed the reopening of the shipping course, at a time when experts warned that removing the effects of the disruption of global shipping and ports could take months.

Reuters quoted Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, as saying that "about 140 ships will cross today" and expressed his hope that "the passage of ships disrupted by the crisis will be completed within three to four days."

Some experts indicated that removing the spillover effects on global shipping and ports could take longer. Jan Hoffmann, an expert in logistics at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, said in a press briefing that “although congestion at the entrance to the canal and its shipping course could end within Four or five days, the end of congestion in the ports may take several months.

Rabi` announced yesterday that the ships stranded at the Suez Canal crossing will begin to cross the canal after the success of the flotation of the Panamanian vessel Evergiven a week ago and the resumption of navigation traffic in the international shipping lane of the canal.

The 400-meter-long "Evergiven", with a capacity of 224,000 tons, was suspended on the 23rd of this March in the Suez Canal and blocked the waterway that connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea, and about 12 percent of global maritime trade passes through it.
