High priority.

The lack of direct channels of contact with Iran, internal disputes in the Tehran leadership and the presidential election scheduled for June complicate US efforts to enter into talks with Iran and make the possible return to the nuclear deal much more difficult - Walla was told!

Biden administration officials involved in the talks.

President Joe Biden has placed the return to the 2015 nuclear deal high on his foreign policy priorities.

Biden has announced that he would be willing to go back and remove the sanctions imposed on Iran during the Trump administration if the Iranians return to fully implementing their commitments under the agreement.

To date, the Biden administration has not held direct talks with Iran, and the Iranians have rejected several US proposals to hold official or informal meetings.

Senior government officials said all talks with Iran over the past two months were indirect - through European countries, Russia or China.

According to them, indirect conversations take longer and in some cases misunderstandings have arisen against this background.

In recent weeks, the United States has sent messages to Iran that it is ready to take reciprocal initial steps and from there gradually move back to the nuclear deal, or alternatively return with one blow to the mutual and full implementation of the agreement.

The Americans tried to check with the Iranians indirectly what could lead to the resumption of talks.

At one point they thought the Iranians were interested in a step-by-step approach, but then in Tehran they made it clear that they were not interested.

A few weeks ago, the Americans handed the Iranians an offer of a first step in exchange for a first step.

Under the proposal, Iranian funds frozen in banks in South Korea will be thawed, and in return Iran will begin to stop some of the violations of the nuclear deal.

The Iranians rejected the offer.

U.S. officials explained that through indirect talks with the Iranians, they were trying to understand what the regime in Tehran was proposing in order to move forward, and so far no clear picture had been obtained.

The Americans believe that the Iranian leadership is divided on how to proceed with the talks on the nuclear agreement.

According to them, it is trying to reach a consensus on the issue, but so far the internal disputes in Tehran have not been resolved on what to do and when to do so - before or after the presidential election in June.

"The process will take time."

The American news site Politico reported on Monday that the United States is working on a new proposal for the Iranians, in an attempt to bring about a resumption of talks on a return to the agreement.

A senior Iranian official commented in an interview with PRESS TV that he would not roll back the nuclear program until the United States removed all sanctions.

"The Biden administration is losing time," he said.

"If it does not lift the sanctions, Iran will take further steps to reduce its commitment to the nuclear deal."

A senior Biden administration official told Walla!

Because at this point there is no summary as to what the next steps might be, but confirmed that new ideas are being discussed between the United States and the other countries that have signed the nuclear deal.

"This process will take longer because the discussions between the United States and Iran are not taking place directly," he explained.
