Before Easter, supermarkets and discounters are seeing a sharp increase in customer numbers.

Here you can find out when you can shop with a little bit of stress before the holidays.

Update from March 30th, 11.02 a.m.:

At Easter, people stock up on larger amounts of food and small gifts for the holidays.

The dealers are now calling on customers to plan ahead and do their shopping in good time.

Due to the access and distance regulations as well as the hygiene regulations, you should only shop on Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday in exceptional cases.

If possible, go to stores in the morning or early afternoon.

Then you have a good chance of doing your shopping without long queues.

In any case, peak times should be avoided, as access could be restricted if there is a large crowd.

These are Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Maundy Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The dealers also advise not to go shopping with the whole family, but rather on your own.

In order to streamline shopping, branches of Aldi Süd and Nord, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland or Real are expanding their opening times on April 1st and 3rd.

Then customers can enter the markets from 7 a.m. instead of 7.30 a.m. or 8 a.m.

However, you have to check whether your preferred market is there on site or on the Internet.

At Easter, some supermarkets offer rapid tests * in order to be able to be tested for the coronavirus.

But the tests are not only available at Aldi, dm and Lidl.

Corona rapid tests are also offered for sale online at Amazon.

Supermarket opening times at Easter: the rules at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Edeka at a glance

First report from March 29th:

Munich - Easter is one of the busiest days in the grocery trade.

No wonder that in addition to customers, dealers also rebelled when Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the federal states announced the so-called Easter rest.

After many protests, the Easter rest was quickly stopped and Merkel apologized to the citizens.

But the confusion among many consumers remains.

When can I go shopping now or go to the hairdresser?

The move away from the “rest days” means that the opening times in the grocery and service providers over the Easter holidays are the same as in previous years.

Shopping over the Easter holiday: Customers should go shopping alone if possible

The food trade is relieved that the federal government wants to allow food sales on Maundy Thursday.

The opening on April 1st will contribute “to a better equalization of the shopping activities of our customers around the Easter holidays”, announced Aldi Süd.

The regular sales day on Thursday also ensures better availability, as all goods can be delivered to the branches as planned.

In view of the distance rules in Corona times, Aldi appealed to its customers to go shopping alone if possible in the week before Easter.

Edeka CEO Markus Mosa said about Merkel's decision.

"This means that the supply of the population can continue to be guaranteed, and customers can more easily spread their purchases over several days."

Shopping over the Easter holidays: Merkel gives up "rest days" plans

According to the original plan of the federal and state governments, supermarkets and discounters should also be closed on Maundy Thursday because of the "rest days".

In addition, it was stated in the room that on Holy Saturday they were only allowed to sell food and no other products such as hygiene products.

Merkel gave up this plan.
