New restrictions: under what conditions can you cancel your train or plane tickets?

2021-03-31T18:52:49.404Z

It's official: while the school holidays were to begin in ten days for the first zone, France finds itself once again under bell and the calendar is upset. What to compromise all the initial projects. Can we cancel tickets already purchased, and at what price?

While the weather is fine and precisely ten days before the planned date of spring break for the first zone, it is yet another cold shower for travelers.

During his speech this Wednesday evening, March 31, the Head of State was categorical: as of Saturday evening, travel is limited throughout France to a radius of 10km for daily outings, without certificate.

During the curfew or for trips exceeding 10 kilometers, a certificate will be required.

And from Monday April 5, interregional travel is prohibited throughout the metropolitan territory, except for compelling reasons.

"The rules in force in the 19 departments in enhanced vigilance will be extended to the entire metropolitan territory from Saturday evening and for four weeks,

" insisted the president

.

A tolerance will be applied to those who would like to

"change region to isolate themselves this Easter weekend"

, however specified Emmanuel Macron, ensuring that controls and sanctions would be strengthened on the public highway.

"French women and men abroad who want to return to France will also be able to do so at any time,"

he added.

The school vacation calendar is also upset:

“From April 12, the whole of France will be placed on spring vacation.

The re-entry will take place for all on April 26, ”

according to the president.

“No more metropolitan area is spared today.

Everyone must take care not to shut themselves up but to limit contacts and meetings as much as possible, ”

explained Emmanuel Macron.

Those who had booked tickets to go to France or Europe in the coming weeks will logically have to give up their plans.

Cancel, yes, but under what conditions?

takes stock of the terms of exchange and reimbursement in force at the main rail and airline companies.

Train: what cancellation conditions at SNCF?

Questioned by

Le Figaro,

SNCF management reserves the right to change its commercial conditions on April 1 depending on the measures announced by the Head of State.

Currently, there are several scenarios.

  • TGV Inoui, Intercités trains, connecting TER, international TGV Inoui to Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Friborg, Germany and Spain

For trips up to and including April 18, all tickets remain exchangeable and refundable free of charge until the last moment.

For trips from April 19 to August 29 inclusive, tickets are also exchangeable and refundable but only until D-3 before departure.

“In the event of an exchange, the price difference remains your responsibility.

Less than 3 days before your departure, the standard fare conditions of your ticket apply, ”

specifies the railway company in its commercial measures.

  • OUIGO trains

For trips until April 18 inclusive, refund or exchange free of charge up to 1h30 before train departure, by filling out this form.

For journeys from April 19 to August 29 inclusive, tickets exchangeable and refundable until D-3 before departure.

  • TER excluding correspondence

Tickets refundable until D-1 before departure.

  • TGV Lyria (to Switzerland)

For travel until April 18, exchange and refund free of charge.

For trips between April 19 and May 3: reimbursement free of charge until D-3 before train departure, after D-3, usual pricing conditions.

  • Thalys (to Belgium)

All Standard and Comfort tickets are exchangeable until the time of departure for journeys made up to and including August 30.

The price difference is the responsibility of the traveler.

The other tickets, initially non-exchangeable, become so, for a fee of € 5.

No refund possible.

More information at this address.

  • Eurostar

Refunds remain possible in the form of a voucher or a ticket exchange for all journeys until September 30.

Credits are valid until December 31.

For a direct refund, the request is made here.

Exchanges are free up to 7 days before departure, afterwards a charge of 40 euros applies.

Air: exchanges, credits or refunds

The main airlines departing from France are also awaiting announcements from Emmanuel Macron to adapt their commercial measures.

However, since the first confinement, they all offer very flexible pricing conditions, in line with (very) scalable movement restrictions ...

At

Air France,

all trips can be changed free of charge and for whatever reason until the day of departure.

"Possible modification of the date and / or destination of your ticket for all flights, regardless of the fare conditions of the ticket, up to the day of departure of your first flight."

If the price of the new ticket is higher, you will have to pay the price difference ”

, specifies the French company in its price conditions.

And to be reimbursed?

Either the fare conditions of your ticket allow it and you can request a direct reimbursement of your flight, or you will receive a credit note valid for 1 year.

The latter is then refundable at any time for 1 year from its date of issue.

At the low-cost subsidiary of Air France,

Transavia,

in the event of a reconfinement, two options: either the traveler cancels his ticket and is reimbursed for the airport taxes only.

Or he postpones his trip free of charge until 2 hours before the flight.

The difference in price on the new ticket is the responsibility of the traveler.

Air Corsica

, for its part, offers travelers a full refund of tickets or a modification without penalty.

On the Corsican and Overseas side, conditions vary.

At

Corsair,

for flights scheduled until December 31, travelers can either request a deferral without change fees, request a credit or request a direct refund, all 24 hours before departure at the latest.

Same story at

Air Caraïbes

with the only difference that the request for reimbursement or credit must be made no later than 7 days before the date of departure.

Air Tahiti Nui

simply indicates that departures before December 31, 2021 are subject to changes free of charge, as are

Air Calin

and

Air Austral,

which sets up modification and cancellation facilities for tickets up to June 15. 2021.

Finally, among low-costs, trade measures are much more restrictive and sometimes obscure.

With

easyJet, you can

change your flight free of charge up to 14 days before departure.

Reimbursement (or the issuance of a credit note) is possible, if and only

"if your flight is affected by a travel restriction linked to confinement",

according to the website of the British company.

Logically, this is what applies in the event of national reconfinement.

On the

Ryanair

side

,

the change fees are also waived for all bookings made before June 30, 2021 but only up to 7 days before departure.
