Our top 10 of the best hotels in Mauritius, from the east coast to the north of the island

2021-03-31T05:10:31.724Z

The Indian Ocean archipelago has some pretty hotel nuggets. Golfers' paradise, luxury ecofriendly or establishment intended for families, our selection for a dream holiday.

A little pineapple-shaped, Mauritius exposes a small coast to the north, to the east and west of wide and long coastlines and to the south a wilder shore.

Depending on the winds, especially the trade winds, we opt for either the east and north coasts, or we favor the west and the south, unless you practice kitesurfing or other board sports.

Very little time difference, seasons reversed compared to the northern hemisphere, a population speaking, in addition to Creole, English and French, a real sense of welcome, so many assets for an enchanted stay.

Review from east to north.

The Summer House, a treasure on a preserved beach

3 star hotel.

This is the kind of address in a still wild place that even Mauritians exchange under the sarong.

Its former French owner has tastefully decorated the 14 rooms, all with a view of the Indian Ocean and the still wild coast.

The new South African owners are renovating it little by little adding a few rooms.

Here the hours pass very quickly, between snorkeling, diving, swimming pool, spa and lounge bar.

In the evening, in the restaurant, which opens onto the garden and the ocean, you can savor the predominantly marine menu, caressed by the light ocean breeze.

The room to book:

"La Vigie" which, as its name suggests, overlooks the ocean and the beach or the new room 10, very spacious with a view.

The price:

from 240 € per night.

La Maison d'Été, coastal road, Poste Lafayette, Mauritius.

Coin de Mire Attitude, family

Located opposite the famous eponymous rock, the Coin de Mire Attitude is a small hotel full of charm where you can stay with your family.

3 star hotel.

Opposite the hotel, the northern tip of Mauritius and Cap Malheureux.

This huge rock where Saint Géran broke forever changed the fate of Paul and Virginie, characters in the eponymous novel by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.

A magnificent site to which you can sail and one of the strengths of this very family-run three-star hotel with 102 rooms, 23 of which are new.

Many guests return year after year.

Small inconvenience, a road separates Coin de Mire from the well-equipped beach with club for water sports.

To compensate for this hazard, the hotel has two swimming pools and a great kids-club.

The room to reserve:

one of the 23 new, more contemporary ones, better soundproofed.

from 153 € per night.

Hotel Ambre, a golfers paradise

Located on the beachfront facing the Indian Ocean, this all-inclusive resort is 10 miles from Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club.

4 star hotel.

The Sun resort group, after having completely renovated this hotel,

all inclusive

and right on the water, is dedicating it to the over 16s.

It thus satisfies couples on their honeymoon, groups of friends, but especially golfers who benefit from privileged access to the 18-hole par 72 course on Île au Cerf.

Tennis, yoga lessons, fitness center, nautical activities, many of which are free, Amber is a real resort with three restaurants, two bars and a spa.

Despite the number of rooms, 297, distributed along the beach and in the tropical garden, guests enjoy real privacy, given the size of the property.

The room to book:

choose those on the beach, north side, the furthest from the main pool and the quietest.

The price:

"all inclusive" from 230 € per day and per person.

Ambre Mauritius, Coastal Road Palmar, Belle Mare 41604, Mauritius.

Zilwa Attitude, Creole above all

Zilwa Attitude Resort is an excellent choice to start your exploration of Mauritius.

Press photo

4 star hotel.

One of our favorites.

Near the fishing village of Grand Gaube, its name "zilwa", "island" in Mauritian, announces its bias: to decline, from decoration to gastronomy, the peculiarities of "camps", as we call here the traditional villas in oceanfront.

Waxed concrete "the bedstead", cheerful colors, sometimes recycled materials, anchor it in the tradition, just like the "sirandanes", Creole riddles, swarmed here and there.

Everywhere, especially in the 214 rooms, coconut fiber woven by local artisans adorns the furniture.

The same concern for “metisaz” in the three restaurants and buffets combining Creole, Indian, Chinese and European cuisines.

Swimming pools, spa with natural products, garden and endless sea, what more could you ask for?

The room to book: the

one on the seafront, upstairs, the 3301.

The price:

from 179 € per night.

Zilwa Attitude, Royal Road, Calodyne 742CU001, Mauritius.

Hotel Veranda Paul et Virginie, romantic

A vintage look with its thatched roofs and exposed stones, but the Veranda Paul et Virginie has an exceptional environment.

4 star hotel.

A vintage look with its thatched roofs and exposed stones but an environment to die for.

It looks almost like sitting on the lagoon, “floating” opposite the string of northern islets.

Here, the sea is calm, the seabed superb for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts and the neighboring fishing village of Grand Gaube.

Le Saint Géran, gourmet restaurant, moored on the pier opens widely onto the ocean, very pleasant in the evening under the stars.

Like many "small" hotels in capacity, 81 rooms and suites, this one only accepts adults.

A policy that is developing more and more in Mauritius.

No screams and untimely jumps in the two pools, but no little ones taking their first steps on the sand either.

Question of sensitivity!

The room to book:

the hotel is adjacent to a village and a public beach, so in the evening, noise is possible.

To avoid this inconvenience, require a recently refurbished "Privilege" room upstairs.

The price:

from 180 € per night.

Veranda Paul et Virginie Hotel & Spa, Royal Road, Grand Gaube 30617, Mauritius.

Seapoint, northern boutique hotel

The very quiet beach of Seapoint fills the followers of idleness Photo press

4 star hotel.

Sober, recently renovated, white on the outside, lagoon colors on the inside, the Seapoint also reserves its 23 rooms for over 12s.

Its beach, very quiet, fills the followers of idleness.

The others can, in a few minutes, spread their towel on the neighboring one of more lively Mont Choisy, then indulge in the pleasures of shopping in Grand Baie, or even in Port-Louis, the capital, only 30 minutes by car.

In short, an ideal location to enjoy the attractions of the island and on returning from these escapades book a treatment at the Thalgo spa before enjoying a delicious cocktail in one of the two bars.

The room to book:

on the first floor with balcony, far from the reception or the suite with terrace on the second.

All of them look out over the sea, but avoid the 2 noisy standard rooms.

The price:

from 360 € for a room, 540 € for the suite, with breakfast.

20 degrees South, a Belgian air!

Le 20 degrees Sud is the only Relais & Châteaux in Mauritius.

Press photo

5-stars hotel.

Yes yes, it is well to the north, despite its name, 20 degrees South.

It is in fact Mauritius' latitude, almost flirting with the tropic of Capricorn.

This Relais & Châteaux, the one and only on the island, between coconut grove and ocean, has other characteristics.

Its 36 rooms are fully furnished with furniture from the Belgian house Flamant, giving it an air of a European bourgeois house.

Its owners acquired and refurbished the M / S Lady Lisbeth, a teak marvel that came out of the Taylor Smith shipyards in Port-Louis in 1929, the oldest motorboat still in service on the “pebble”.

Now transformed into a restaurant with a few tables, it offers gastronomic and romantic dinner cruises concocted by chef Sanjeev Purahoo.

The room to book:

upstairs, sea side, with a terrace (but the 40 are good) and out of season treat yourself to an Australe suite, just perfect.

The price:

from 420 € per night.

Hotel 20 Degrés Sud Relais & Chateaux, coastal road, Pointe Malartic, Grand Baie, Mauritius.

The Salt of Palmar, ecofriendly

Salt of Palmar is the first establishment in the Salt collection developed by Lux *.

Press photo

5-stars hotel.

Between Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce, this boutique hotel decorated by interior designer Camille Walala, French living in London, showcases Mauritian know-how with furniture, objects and works of art by local designers.

Itou craftsmanship, 100% organic cotton bedding, courtesy products and cooking with a great range of plants.

The 59 rooms overlook either the Indian Ocean and the 1.4 km long beach, or the garden of a thousand essences.

It is the first establishment in the Salt collection developed by Lux *, a Mauritian hotel group, with a real concern to preserve Mauritian culture and the environment by banning plastic, television screens and loud music.

The room to reserve:

one of the two hoisted to the third floor, for the sunrise.

The price:

from 245 € per night.

One & Only Le Saint Géran, at the cutting edge

At the end of Belle Mare beach, nestled under coconut palms between the lagoon and a vast lagoon, the Saint Géran offers supreme refinement.

Press photo

5-stars hotel.

Almost 50 years since the establishment with the blue roof, spotted by plane, as its founder Sol Keznez liked to point out, has attracted VIPs from all over the world thanks to its exceptional service and its location.

Perched on a peninsula piercing the golden sand between ocean and lagoon, the Saint Géran dominates the situation.

To resist competition from the island's 29 other 5-stars and better meet the needs of younger and more nomadic guests, the forerunner of luxury Mauritius resorts has been given a makeover.

It starts a new life with separate swimming pools for adults and children, kids club and anthology spa, increased catering offer, decoration of the 143 rooms warmed with elegance.

Certainly the most VIP address on the east coast.

The room to book:

an "Ocean" with balcony to see the sun rise.

The price:

from 560 € per night.

One & Only Le Saint Géran, Pointe de Flacq, Poste de Flacq, 41518, Mauritius.

Royal Palm Beachcomber, palm of excellence

Member of the prestigious brand The Leading Hotels of the World, this haven of peace perpetuates the Mauritian art of living, tinged with luxury and tradition.

Press photo

5-stars hotel.

Younger than One & Only, 45 years old, owned by the Mauritius group Beachcomber, member of the Leading Hotels of The World, this beautiful establishment has won, no pun intended, the gold palm of the Mauritian hotel industry, renewing itself with elegance, friendliness, by the way.

It is true that for years it was headed by Jean-Pierre Chaumard, a great man in the hotel industry.

Today, Gregory Coquet, born in Mauritius to a family of printers, is in the same vein of the constant concern of his guests.

He has renewed the entire wellness area, found a very good replacement for the chef, developed the “Ti Royal” kids club so that children and parents can enjoy their holidays.

The room to book:

Royal Palm only offers suites, 69, all facing the sea. With children we choose a garden level near the beach, between adults we opt for an Ocean suite upstairs .

The price:

from 420 € per night.

Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury, Royal road, Grand Baie, Mauritius.
