Because of the pandemic, species extinction is not pausing.

The excursions and lectures by the conservationists, however, do.

The LBV volunteers are still active - their new podcast, in which they talk about their everyday lives, is called “Ausgeschlegen”.

Hilpoltstein - polar bears float on lonely clods.

Orangutans wander through destroyed rainforests.

When there is talk of the extinction of species, one has such images in one's head.

“But the biological diversity in Bavaria is also seriously threatened.

What happens elsewhere also happens to us, ”says Stefanie Bernhardt from the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV).

The brownish curlew, the curlew and the Montagu's Harrier - all the native bird species are endangered because their habitats are shrinking.

The LBV actually explains how to recognize and protect them in lectures and on excursions in the protected areas.

However, they have been canceled due to the corona for over a year.

Therefore, the LBV now wants to bring people closer to everything about species protection and environmental education in a different way.

"Flown out": State Association for Bird Protection launches podcast on species protection

The new podcast series that the LBV has therefore set up is called “Ausgeflogen”.

Stefanie Bernhardt has set up a small studio in Hilpoltstein (district of Roth).

Via video switch, she captures the voices of the volunteers who are also active in times of Corona *.

“We finally wanted to let the people have their say, who otherwise act in the background, but are actually our backbone,” says Bernhardt.

Somebody like that is also the protagonist of the first podcast episode: Sebastian Amler is 23 years old and an active environmentalist in the Weißenburg-Günzhausen district.

Meadow breeders like lapwing are particularly close to his heart.

The student locates their nests in the pastures and marks them with bamboo poles and flags.

"So that the farmer sees that he has to mow the outside," says Amler.

He is in direct contact with the landowners and informs them of the time when the little lapwing have finally fledged.

Bird conservationist Sebastian Ampler: "You can only protect what you know"

True to the motto “You can only protect what you know”, Amler usually offers excursions to the Altmühlsee.

There he explains everything to do with bird species worthy of protection to the participants.

He is now using the podcast to do this and tells, among other things, of the lapwing and the black godwit: “They are species that you keep in mind.

You don't forget the lapwing with its feather comb roll.

Unfortunately there are only so few left, but when you see them, you can easily recognize them. ”And then everyone can react.

And this is exactly how the podcast should work: “We not only want to pass on our fascination for nature, but also motivate them to become active in matters of species protection ourselves,” explains Bernhardt.

Amler hopes that the podcast will especially appeal to his own age group.

The episodes last between 30 and 45 minutes.

Each time, Bernhardt lets a different “honorary hero” have their say - with around 4,000 of them, the stories for the podcast won't run out that quickly.

“As soon as the situation allows, the plan is to drive through Bavaria and meet people on site,” says Bernhardt.

There is even a chance to catch bird sounds - even if the listener cannot see the birds fly over the water or breed in the grass.
