The farmers of Homs countryside demanded to secure the requirements of agricultural production, such as seeds and fertilizers, and to rehabilitate Al-Qusayr silos to facilitate the receipt of wheat from farmers, to provide vaccines and fodder for livestock, to activate the Agricultural Bank branch, and to secure electricity for agricultural wells.
During a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Qatna in the Qusayr region today, farmers indicated the need to pay attention to the issue of productive income-generating grants and distribute them to rural families in the region and to develop a mechanism for receiving, marketing and pricing crops to ensure an adequate material income for farmers.
During his tour, the Minister of Agriculture was briefed on the reality of crops in a number of regions, especially wheat, barley, almonds and potatoes, and he heard from farmers and livestock breeders their problems and demands to find appropriate solutions to them in order to ensure the continuation of the productive process and increase the cultivated areas.
In a statement to reporters, the Minister of Agriculture indicated that the field tour aims to track the agricultural reality in the various regions of the governorate, to secure appropriate conditions to improve agricultural production, increase cultivated areas, and find appropriate solutions to overcome the difficulties that hinder the work of farmers, especially the provision of agricultural production requirements of fuel and others.
He explained that coordination has been made with the Ministers of Electricity and Oil to amend the electric rationing programs, as it guarantees the continuity of electricity delivery for hours that are sufficient and allows farmers to fully irrigate the cultivated areas, pointing out that the damage to the potato crop due to the frost is light, while the almond trees have been damaged more, stressing that compensation will be given to the affected farmers according to Damage percentages determined by the Drought and Natural Disaster Mitigation Fund.
The minister's tour also included the Eagle Eye manufacturing unit in the eastern countryside of Homs, which entered into production a short time ago, with the participation of 5 beneficiary rural families who collect, process and market milk within the village and the surrounding villages and other agricultural products, in addition to seeing the work mechanism in the rural manufacturing and marketing unit in the village. Engineer Mona Mahfoud, Head of the Rural Development Department in the Homs Agriculture Directorate, indicated in a statement to SANA that, to date, more than 44 manufacturing units have been launched in the region, including one in the village of Ein Al-Nisr specialized in producing the famous cheeses.
