The labor market in Germany continues to defy the corona crisis.
But the renewed lockdown is still leaving deep marks on the labor market.
Nuremberg - The number of unemployed in Germany fell by 77,000 in March compared to February thanks to the usual spring recovery.
A total of 2.827 million people were unemployed in March, 492,000 more than at the same time last year, the Federal Employment Agency announced on Wednesday in Nuremberg.
The unemployment rate was 6.2 percent.
“In March there was a noticeable spring recovery on the labor market,” said the Federal Agency's chairman, Detlef Scheele.
"And that although the infections are increasing and the restrictions for some economic sectors still exist," he added.
However, the data collected by the Federal Agency will only take effect until March 12th.
Labor market: More short-time work again
Overall, the labor market still shows clear traces of the Corona * crisis, which has been going on for a year, said Scheele.
Among other things, short-time work remains high.
In the period from March 1st to 25th, companies reported short-time work for 197,000 people.
Whether this will actually be implemented can only be determined after a few weeks' delay.
The last reliable data go back to January.
In the first month of 2021, short-time work benefits were paid for 2.85 million people.
The peak in short-time work was reached in April 2020 with almost six million people, after which short-time work declined steadily until November 2020.
Due to the lockdown imposed in autumn of last year, short-time working has been increasing again since November - especially in industries such as catering, retail and tourism.
