A slap in the face to the Biden administration?

Iran has begun enriching uranium in the fourth cluster of advanced centrifuges at the Natanz underground enrichment plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported today (Thursday).

"On March 21, 2021, the Agency confirmed that Iran had begun supplying natural Yoaf 6 gas to the fourth cluster of 174 Irm 2 centrifuges," the agency said in a statement released today.

The announcement refers to the beginning of the process of enriching uranium in the xeloploride gas.

The model of centrifuges used by Iran is prohibited under the nuclear agreement and can be used to enrich uranium by up to 20 percent.

This is another escalation with the US administration, after it was reported earlier this week that Biden and his people were considering offering Iran easing sanctions in exchange for ending a breach of the nuclear agreement on its part and as a preliminary step before talks on a US return to the nuclear deal.

The commander of the Revolutionary Guards, General Hussein Salami, said on Tuesday that his country did not need a nuclear deal with the powers and that the regime in Tehran was indifferent to US sanctions on the country's economy.

This is the first response by an Iranian official to a report on the news site Politico, according to which the Biden government is considering offering Iran relief in sanctions against it in exchange for stopping uranium enrichment and installing advanced centrifuges in the country's nuclear facilities, as a first step in negotiating the nuclear deal.

Salami made the remarks at a memorial service for regime victims in Yazd province in the center of the country.

"We are indifferent to US sanctions and we probably do not need the nuclear deal. We have chosen the path of sovereignty in order to make our country stronger," Salami declared.

"We have sanctions, but their impact on our economy is rapidly fading. Our country has become more independent in many areas and the enemy knows that the impact of its sanctions is diminishing daily," the Iranian general added.

It is important to remember that Salami, by virtue of his position, represents the ideological and uncompromising arm of the regime, and his remarks seem to come alongside feverish diplomatic efforts on the part of President Hassan Rouhani's men to try and reap significant achievements in negotiations with the United States before the end of his term.
