Almost 4,000 people infected with corona are currently dying in Brazil every day. But President Bolsonaro calls on the regions to finally end the lockdown. Displeasure against the right-wing populist is growing.

These are scenes like from an end-of-time film - undertakers in Brazil's metropolis of Sao Paulo work through the nights to lower coffin after coffin into the rows of dug graves.

Relatives and friends only have a brief moment to say goodbye, then the next dead are buried.

On Wednesday alone, 3,780 people died of or with COVID-19 in Brazil within 24 hours, a new high.

The health system is overloaded, in hospitals, like here in Bauru last week, COVID patients are lying in the hallways, waiting for free intensive care beds.

28 people died here in the first few weeks of March alone.

Fred Nicacio, doctor

"28 people is a lot when you consider that half of those patients have died in the last ten days and all of these patients have died waiting for an ICU bed."

Since the beginning of the year, the corona pandemic in Brazil has got almost completely out of control, the vaccination program is running slowly and the mass of infections is a breeding ground for new mutations.

After the particularly aggressive variant P.1 was discovered in Brazil in January, scientists identified another mutation near Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

How dangerous it is is still being investigated.

However, President Jair Bolsonaro continues to urge that measures to contain the virus be withdrawn.

Jair Bolsonaro, President Brazil

"We demand that the lockdown policy be ended, because that is in the hands of the governors and mayors, because only then will we be able to return to normal."

The pressure on Bolsonaro is not only increasing because of the corona deaths.

After the president replaced six ministers and three top military commanders earlier this week, the opposition warns of a planned coup and calls for an impeachment trial against Bolsonaro.

The military is Bolsonaro's most important pillar in the government, he has filled thousands of positions in the government apparatus with soldiers.

The commanders and Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva had resisted the politicization of the military - and have now been fired.

A warning sign for the opposition, and the development is causing displeasure among more and more military personnel.

In addition, the comeback of ex-President Lula da Silva has given the incumbent Bolsonaro an equal opponent for next year's election.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Ex-President Brazil

"Many of these Covid deaths could have been prevented if the government had done its job."

It remains to be seen how long the president can withstand the increasingly dramatic situation in Brazil.
