The municipality of Oberhaching wants to hold sport and recreational cyclists who are traveling too fast and who do not adhere to the traffic rules accountable.

In the Environment and Transport Committee, a majority now voted in favor of mandatory labeling for cyclists.

The SPD parliamentary group, on the other hand, failed with its request to quickly rededicate Linienstraße into a bicycle street.

Oberhaching - Especially around the Deisenhofen S-Bahn station, on Linienstraße at the level of Pennymarkt and at the S-Bahn underpasses in town, there are always dicey situations when sports and leisure cyclists race past pedestrians without slowing down and they are frightened.

It also happens that Rüpel block motorists without further ado and put them in a dangerous position by overtaking.

Offenses can then be tracked

“On the one hand, it is generally to be welcomed that more and more people are using the bike, but at the same time it is important to convey to the inconsiderate sport cyclists that the road traffic regulations apply to them as well as to any other road user,” said Mayor Stefan Schelle (CSU).

He suggested advocating compulsory labeling for bicycles.

He hopes that cyclists will become more aware that they have to obey traffic rules.

In addition, such offenses could also be followed up if they act against them.

"It is a thick board that has to be drilled, and a political act that other bodies such as the community day have to deal with."

Margit Markl (SPD) agreed, at the same time emphasizing that road safety is also an important factor.

"It is problematic to do without the bell and light just because of the weight of the bike," he said.

Valentina Eckel (Greens) countered this by saying that “you should be happy for every cyclist” and that the road traffic regulations should be geared more towards the needs of cyclists and pedestrians.

Ultimately, six to three votes were in favor of supporting mandatory labeling.

Traffic planning office should investigate the situation

The SPD wants to achieve greater safety for cyclists in Linienstraße - by converting the street into a bicycle street.

As Schelle emphasized, the administration is fundamentally open to the idea.

However, they see the need to use the expertise of a transport planning bureau in order to be able to take all consequences into account.

So many people do not even know which rules apply on a bicycle street, so that detailed public relations would be necessary in any case.

Since the relevant provisions are hardly known, according to Schelle, misunderstandings can arise that the whole thing also harbors potential for conflict.

Namely when cyclists thought that the street was now reserved for them, which in turn would probably meet with little acceptance from the residents.

In addition, a bicycle road would have to be signposted at each junction.

Modifications are also required.

For example, one would have to consider changing the arrangement of parking spaces, as well as abolishing the right-for-left rule.

Ultimately, the SPD's application for an early rededication was rejected with a dissenting vote.

Instead, a traffic planning office will now investigate the situation.
