The Ministry of Health of Panama approved this Thursday the emergency use of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, with which it seeks to prevent covid-19 in adults over 18 years of age, according to a press release from the Directorate of Pharmacies and Drugs of the country.

This decision occurs while Panama has been registering for several weeks a sustained decrease in infections and deaths from covid 19, but, at the same time, the latent threat of a rebound in cases due to the discovery of some nine infections with the Brazilian variant of covid- 19, indicated by the Ministry of Health as more contagious and aggressive.

Until Wednesday night, the country accumulated 355,051 positive cases and 6,114 deaths from the disease.

In early February, the Panamanian government reported that it had made the request, which consisted of acquiring three million doses of the Russian vaccine with the hope of receiving them in March 2021.

For now, only about 457,000 doses of the 3,000,000 vaccines negotiated with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and BioNTech have arrived.
