Armin Laschet or Markus Söder? The K question in the Union was recently reduced to these two options. But now several MPs bring another name to the debate.

Crucial days are ahead of the Union.

Between Easter and Pentecost, it should be clarified who will lead the CDU and CSU as candidates for chancellor in the federal election campaign.

It is taken for granted that one of the two party leaders will be chosen: CDU chairman Armin Laschet or CSU leader Markus Söder.

Most recently, there had been the first voices from the ranks of the CDU who advocated Söder as candidate for chancellor.

In a recent survey by the opinion research institute Civey for SPIEGEL, 84 percent of the Union supporters questioned said that they did not consider Laschet to be a suitable candidate for chancellor.

Markus Söder, on the other hand, consider 86 percent of those surveyed to be suitable.

A third name is now also being brought into play in the CDU: the parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag, Ralph Brinkhaus.

This is what several members of the Union from the Bundestag and state parliaments told SPIEGEL.

"Ralph Brinkhaus has great charisma"

Astrid Mannes, CDU member of the Bundestag

Michael von Abercron, CDU member of the Bundestag from Schleswig-Holstein, said he thought Söder was a good option.

But if Brinkhaus took over, this would be a charming alternative.

“Ralph Brinkhaus would be suitable.

I am an absolute fan of his, to that extent he would have my full support if there were actually to be a candidacy! "

Sepp Müller, member of the Bundestag from Saxony-Anhalt, sees it similarly.

“Ralph Brinkhaus acted clearly and quickly in our group on the unfortunate mask affair.

At the moment I see him at the forefront of the CDU and it is clear to me that he should also be considered for the candidacy for chancellor, ”says Müller.

Uwe Harms, member of the state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt and candidate for the Bundestag, says: “Ralph Brinkhaus is already united as the leader of the Union parliamentary group in the CDU and CSU.

He is sending the right signals in federal politics and has proven in recent months that he would be a very suitable candidate for Chancellor.

He sets the right topics and has the necessary competence. "

Member of the Landtag, Marc Reinhardt from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, would also be open to a Brinkhaus candidate for chancellor: "There should be no bans on thinking in such a difficult situation for the candidate for chancellor."

Member of the Bundestag Astrid Mannes from Hessen says: “Ralph Brinkhaus has a great charisma and I can well imagine him as a candidate for Chancellor.

Ultimately, however, the decisive factor is whom people place the greatest trust in. "

“Ralph Brinkhaus has integrity.

He appears clear and robust and is authentic, ”says the CDU member of the Bundestag Stefan Sauer.

The two party leaders who make their decision would do well to look at other possible candidates as well.

"Ralph Brinkhaus would definitely be a possible candidate for chancellor," said Sauer.

Goods on a signal from Brinkhaus

Sylvia Pantel, CDU member of the Bundestag from North Rhine-Westphalia, becomes very clear: "Those who think they would be eligible for the chancellorship alone must understand that the one with the best prospects of success should do it and they don't seem to have it." had to think about other candidates, »it's about the well-being of our country and the party.

I think we should also talk about Ralph Brinkhaus or again about Friedrich Merz as possible candidates for chancellor, ”said Pantel.

One should also think about a member survey.

Several MPs from North Rhine-Westphalia also told SPIEGEL that they would stand behind Brinkhaus if he publicly expressed his wish to run for chancellor.

At the moment, however, they do not want to be named.

One of them put it this way: “Brinkhaus can talk and inspire people, he doesn't belong to any wing in the party.

As a candidate for Chancellor, he should be eligible for the Union. "

Brinkhaus himself has so far held back.

However, at the beginning of January, before Laschet was elected CDU leader, he said that he did not want to commit to the CDU and CSU party leaders for the Union’s candidacy, but that he could also introduce other candidates.

And a few weeks later he made it clear that he wanted to have a say in the nomination of the candidate for chancellor.
