At least 36 people were killed this morning (Friday) after a train derailed in eastern Taiwan, the country's Ministry of Transportation said this morning.

In addition, 72 people were injured.

Apparently, the accident occurred after the train collided with a truck, with its back part inside the tunnel.

According to authorities, rescuers who arrived at the scene encountered crushed carriages.

The accident occurred at the beginning of a weekend when the Qingming Festival was celebrated in Taiwan, and in an area considered a popular tourist destination.

State media reported that a truck that was "not parked properly" allegedly interfered with the train's lane.

The train, which was traveling to Taitong with 350 passengers on board, derailed north of the Howellin, so some of its carriages collided with the tunnel walls.

Between 80 and 100 people were evacuated from the first four carriages, but rescuers are having difficulty reaching the next four carriages, which were badly damaged in the accident.

Apparently, the front of the train was already out of the tunnel, so the rear carriages were hit harder.

Rescue efforts continue.

This is the worst train accident in the country in the last three decades.

The previous severe train accident in Taiwan occurred in 2018, when 18 people were killed and 175 injured when a train derailed in the northeast of the country.
