The 56th edition of “Jugend forscht - Students experiment” was not like any other.

Because of Corona, the tinkerer's competition could only take place digitally.

51 young scientists from 13 schools presented 30 projects.

Airport - The airport has acted as the sponsor of the competition in the Munich North region for 19 years. “Let the future there” was the motto this year.

The 23 jurors could only decide via video conference.

Inspired by the current situation, two young researchers from “Schüler experimentieren” dealt with the corona pandemic and won first prize in the working world category: 13-year-old Johanna Leonhard and 14-year-old Milena Starovoitova from Ismaning High School built a distance meter for kindergarten children who are not yet able to judge distances properly.

With the help of a microcontroller and an ultrasonic sensor, the minimum distance of 1.5 meters is measured continuously.

If it falls below this, an acoustic signal warns the children that they are too close.

A good example of innovative thinking in the field of environmental protection comes from the winners in the technology competition (students experiment): The two twelve-year-olds Leon Leitner and Levin Yanik Beyerlein from Luitpold Gymnasium Munich have designed a special boat to determine the water quality: With their help, out With the fiber-optic, remote-controlled watercraft "Aquabot 2.0" you can measure the water quality online.

Two different sensors on board analyze the oxygen content and the pH value and transmit the data live to a laptop on the bank.

The virtual state competition, the second round, for “Jugend forscht” took place shortly before the Easter holidays, the one for “Schüler experimentieren” is scheduled for April 16.

The following winners of the regional competition organized by Munich Airport qualified for this:

Working world: “Students experiment”: Help to keep a minimum distance from Johanna Leonhard (13 years) and Milena Starovoitova (14), Ismaning grammar school);

Biology: “Students experiment”: Investigation of the growth of cress seeds on different surfaces by Tanja Fan (9), Amalia Hein (11) and Diaratou Thiam (10), Ismaning High School;

“Jugend forscht”: “Molecular docking” of new potential antiviral agents against Sars-CoV-2 by Leopold Zaitz (15), Luitpold Gymnasium Munich;

Geosciences and spatial sciences: “Jugend forscht”: bones tell environmental history by Finn Martin Fesq (17), Karlsfeld technical school;

Mathematics / computer science: "Students experiment": The Arduino as a measuring device by Malte Rauschenbach (10), Franz-Marc-Gymnasium Markt Schwaben;

"Jugend forscht": Real-time ray tracing on Adaptively-Sampled Distance Fields by Jonathan Hahne (18), Technical University of Munich:

Physics: “Jugend forscht”: self-made computed tomography by Tobias Stadler (17), Waldkraiburg grammar school;

Technology: "Students experiment": AquaBot 2.0 - remote-controlled research boat for water sampling, analysis and transmission by Leon Leitner (12) and Levin Yanik Beyerlein (12), Luitpold Gymnasium Munich;

“Jugend forscht”: Sonic Light Vision by Kevin Pfalz (15), Luitpold Gymnasium Munich, and Dezhong Zhuang (15), Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium Haar.
