Questions about coronavirus vaccines

Dr. Huerta,

I have been hospitalized for 20 days

x Covid they discharged me and

today I am better,

the question is after

how long can I get

vaccinated?

- ismael machuca rico (@RicoMachuca) March 31, 2021

Hi Ismael.

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), the person who has suffered covid-19 can be vaccinated at any time after the disease has passed, although it is recommended that it be done after 3 months, as it is considered that natural immunity protects you at least until that date.

@drhuerta What is the efficacy and efficiency of the Sinopharm Vaccine vs the Sinovac Vaccine, are they both suitable for all types of adults?

- Marco Vidal (@MarcoVidHu) March 31, 2021

Hi Mark.

As we said in the March 4 episode, efficacy and effectiveness do not mean the same thing.

Efficacy is calculated in a controlled clinical trial in which the type of volunteers are chosen to participate, and the vaccine is compared against a placebo.

Effectiveness is calculated by vaccinating all types of people in real life, and vaccinated versus unvaccinated are compared.

So far, for Chinese vaccines there is only efficacy data, which is 79.34% for Sinopharm and 50.38 in a trial in Brazil and 83.5% in a trial in Turkey for Sinovac.

We do not yet have data on effectiveness for Chinese vaccines.

@drhuerta hello Dr Huerta, a friend received the Pfizer vaccine and the next day he started with symptoms, which he thought were a reaction to the vaccine.

These symptoms worsened, so he took a test and it was positive for covid.

His% SpO2 dropped a lot and he ended up in the hospital.

- Alex Perry García 🌀 (@PerryTheReal) March 31, 2021

Very good question Alex.

What could have happened is that your friend was vaccinated when he was already infected, so the symptoms began the next day.

The disease that he developed is the same disease that he would have developed without being vaccinated, that is, with a probability of 80% mild, 15% severe and 5% severe that requires hospitalization.

Sadly, your friend fell into the last group.

Very sorry.

@drhuerta a question, is there a study where you can read if they first use a vaccine from a certain house and the second dose is applied from another pharmaceutical house

- Andie (@AQuevaz) March 31, 2021

Hi Andie.

That's a good question, sadly I don't know of any studies that describe that situation.

However, I must remind you that it is advisable to complete the vaccination with the same vaccine.

@drhuerta Are all vaccines effective with the three variants (mutations), existing until now?

- Silvestre (@SilvestreTalice) March 31, 2021

Silvestre, as we saw in the February 18 episode, there is some indication that the vaccines are less effective against the variants.

However, according to data published this April 1 by Pfizer and BioNTech, their vaccine appears to be fully effective against the worrying variant B.1.351 of the virus, which is the dominant strain circulating in South Africa.

On the other hand, the AstraZeneca vaccine had to be withdrawn from the vaccination program in South Africa, due to the null efficacy against variant B.1.351

@MauFernandini @mabel_huertas Please ask @drhuerta the question if a person who takes warfarin undergoing heart surgery, how should the Pfizer vaccine be administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously?

I appreciate the answer

- Elvis (@elvistq) March 31, 2021

Hello Elvis, of course I do.

Studies have been done with the flu vaccine - which also uses the intramuscular route - and it has been shown that people who take warfarin have no problems after vaccination.

Doctor Elmer greetings from Peru, could you tell us in your podcast if any current vaccine for covid has contraindications with people with arrhythmia and auticular fibrillation or there is data if they are vaccinating in INCOR @EsSaludPeru

- Anthony.05 (@ AnthOny_28_05) March 31, 2021

Hi Anthony.

I am not aware of any vaccine that cannot be applied to people with arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation or other heart problems.

On the contrary, remember that people with chronic heart disease are at risk of complications if they contract COVID-19, so they should be vaccinated.

@drhuerta Good evening Dr, a question from a person who has herpes zoster, is it advisable to get vaccinated against covid19?

- Mario Ortiz Carreño (@MarioAOC) March 31, 2021

Hello Mario.

I do not know of any contraindications for a person who has had shingles to be vaccinated.

Obviously, if the person has shingles and is very distressed by the symptoms, they should wait to recover before getting vaccinated.

@drhuerta, how long is the protection given by the vaccine?

This means that when the effect passes we must vaccinate again (it is said that the protection is from 3 to 8 months, is this true?) .-

- Made (@ made_mejia2) March 31, 2021

Hello Made, as Pfizer and BioNTech said - through a press release - that the analysis of the data from the phase 3 study until March 13 shows that the vaccine continues to provide protection for at least six months after completion both doses, including in South Africa, which is good news.

Protection is likely to last even longer than that, vaccine experts say.

We will have to wait for the analysis of the 12 months, to know if the vaccine still protects all that time.

Hello, my name is Nathalia, sorry I was looking for info on this topic and I came across this tweet.

I had GBS almost five years ago and when I went to get vaccinated they recommended me not to do it because there was not enough information to know what would happen to me next.

Have you already been vaccinated?

- Nathalia (@N_Villarroel_) March 30, 2021

Hi Nathalia.

According to the CDC, people who have suffered Guillain-Barré can receive the vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.

@drhuerta, what consequences would it have if I did not receive my second dose of the COVID 19 vaccine (Pfizer) within 21 days, or if I receive it after 45 days or more?

Low% efficiency?

- RSM (@Tacorora) March 30, 2021

That point has not been studied, RSM, but theoretically, the second dose - still 45 days after the first - could give you the boost you need to be fully protected.

Please speak to your doctor.

@drhuerta how many days after being vaccinated am I immune, and how long does that immunity last, thank you

- Marino Garzon Agredo (@agredo_garzon) March 30, 2021

Hello Marino.

It is considered that immunity begins to develop 10 to 15 days after the first dose, achieving - for vaccines that require two doses - partial protection after that date.

Questions about ivermectin

I understand that it does not cure, but they say something if it lessens the effects or is it also false ???

- Gissella YB (@GyseYb) March 31, 2021

Good question Gissella.

According to the WHO statement, analysis of data from 16 randomized controlled trials, with 2,407 people studied, including inpatients and outpatients with COVID-19, demonstrated that ivermectin does not reduce mortality, the need for mechanical ventilation, the need for hospital admission, nor does it decrease the time for clinical improvement in patients with covid-19.

Astrid asks: Regarding ivermectin, I know that it does not cure, and it only reduces some symptoms in some people.

I have my doubts regarding the side effects.

Could you tell me what they are?

Hi Astrid, excellent question.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some of the side effects that may be associated with ivermectin include:

  • Acne,

  • Sickness,

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea,

  • Stomach ache,

  • Swelling of the face or limbs

  • Dizziness

  • Seizures,

  • Confusion,

  • Sudden drop in blood pressure

  • Severe skin rash - requiring potential hospitalization-

  • And liver damage or hepatitis.

Questions about coronavirus reinfection

Good afternoon doctor, one question, if a person suffered from covid 19 months ago and fully recovered, but at the moment his partner suffers from the disease, the recovered person can infect other people even though he no longer gets sick?

- FRIEDLAND (@ FRIEDLA82499789) March 30, 2021

That's a good question, Friedland.

Theoretically, it can happen, but we do not know of any study that has studied that particular fact.

@drhuerta Hello Dr.!

I am from Argentina and I caught the Covid in January / 21.

I am 70 years old and I spent it at home, 11 days with a fever and then 11 with non-serious shortness of breath.

I have been asthmatic since baby.

I did a full post-Covid and I'm fine.

Can I get reinfected?

Thanks!

- Roberto (@RobAriola) March 30, 2021

Greetings Roberto.

As we have heard in previous episodes, reinfection is a scientifically accepted fact, so a person who has already overcome covid-19 should continue to take care of themselves as if they had not had it.

Other questions about covid-19

@drhuerta, would you be so kind as to tell me what it means for doctors to say in a hospital that the patient's condition is delicate?

Unfortunately due to the saturation of patients with Coviv only that they wrote in a list about one patient

- Jose Ramos (@Guatejose) April 1, 2021

Hi José, very good question.

According to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, these are some useful definitions to understand the categorization of a patient's health status:

  • Stable

: vital signs - pulse, temperature, blood pressure, respiration - are stable and within normal limits.

The patient is conscious, but may feel uncomfortable, but the prognostic indicators are favorable.

  • Severe or delicate

: vital signs may be unstable, not within normal limits, so the patient is seriously ill, and prognostic indicators are doubtful.

  • Critical

    - Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits.

The patient may be unconscious, and the prognostic indicators are unfavorable.

@drhuerta

Good

morning

dr., Reading an article about covid-19 I was surprised by part of that article and it was why pathologists do not do autopsies to know for sure the causes of death, if before pathologists found causes and then the cure.

- Robert Ponce de Leon (@ropoleca) March 30, 2021

Hello, Robert.

Actually, they are.

Moreover, it is considered that autopsies that were no longer performed as frequently as before, have had an increase in this pandemic.

@drhuerta Good evening, could you tell me if vertigo is related to Covid19?

Thank you.

- Sky (@ Sky79291413) March 30, 2021

Hello Darling.

As we saw in the March 29 episode, a recent study showed that covid-19 is associated with:

  • 7.6% of people have hearing loss,

  • 14.8% tinnitus

  • And 7.2% rotational vertigo, which is the condition in which a person feels that all things around him revolve around him.

Questions @drhuerta 1. How beneficial are vitamin “C” supplements (powders, pills to dilute in water) for the prevention of COVID, being healthy?

Since the pandemic started, my wife and I have taken them every other day.

2. After being inoculated is 🧵

- Alberto Iglesias D 🇲🇽🇪🇸🇪🇺 (@albertitoiglesi) March 29, 2021

Hello Alberto.

There is no scientific proof that vitamin C supplements have any effect in preventing Covid-19.

Vitamin C is important for the defense system, but it must be obtained from food.
