The doctors had hardly given him another chance.

But Rainer Braun is a fighter and survived COVID 19.

But he still suffers from the consequences.

Nandlstadt / Freising

- Rainer Braun (63) knows that he owes all the years that are yet to come to his "iron will" as well as the intensive care doctors and nurses at the Freising Clinic.

Admittedly: he still suffers from the consequences of his corona infection a year later.

And will probably always have to live with it to a certain extent.

He told the FT his story of suffering and his way back to life.

It started in March 2020. Corona was not yet the dominant topic in Germany and the district.

One Monday, says Braun, he was “already modest”.

He had difficulty breathing, but no cough and no fever.

His family doctor diagnosed a cold, Corona was not on the bill at that time.

Braun was getting worse and worse, but the blood values were okay.

On March 14, nothing helped: Braun remembers that he could hardly breathe and an ambulance was called.

He could no longer walk because of shortness of breath and exhaustion, an ambulance came, after injections and oxygen he felt a little better, the transport was possible.

His last memory: He will now be "put to sleep"

Braun was brought to the Freising Clinic, where he was immediately placed in the intensive care unit.

The last thing he remembers was a doctor who told him that he would now be "put to sleep".

In plain language: The then 62-year-old from Nandlstadt was put into an artificial coma and ventilated, later even an incision was made in the trachea.

The next thing he remembers is that he woke up and saw cables all around him.

It was when he was first brought back from the coma.

But a CT examination showed that the lungs were still badly damaged, and Braun was again put into an artificial coma.

After a few days he was woken up again and Braun received a blood exchange.

Eating is hard to think of

From then on, things slowly went uphill, remembers Braun.

Nevertheless: Rainer Braun was exhausted, he just wanted to lie down, he was hardly able to eat, and even the smallest exercises in physiotherapy were almost impossible for him to cope with.

Rainwer Braun stayed in the intensive care unit until April 21st and has nothing but praise for the nurses and doctors: “I wouldn't have survived anywhere else,” the Nandlstadt-born resident is certain.

Until May 7th, Braun was transferred to a ward in the Freising Hospital, and as far as possible he supplemented exercises with a physiotherapist with his own training.

But at first he was still not able to eat, at least after a few days it was at least possible with oxygen.

When he was able to take the first steps in the corridor with help in the first few days of May, he was released.

Braun admits: “I felt deported.” He was still at home for a week, then rehab began in the Prinz Ludwig Clinic in Bad Reichenhall.

Braun used the week at home to build up further.

The procedure lasted four weeks - four weeks in which he learned to walk again, in which he did aqua aerobics and other exercises, in which he also got paraffin baths for the joints.

He still feels short of breath when walking

But that wasn't all.

“It's still a tough road,” says Braun.

Walks are now possible, even if he still feels short of breath, the joints still hurt, which may lead to another rehabilitation measure, since Christmas he has also had problems with his jaw.

And he left scars from his time on artificial respiration in the prone position - on his face and chin.

Help us to encourage them

The corona statistics in the Freising district now show well over 5,000 recovered people.

But it is becoming ever clearer and clearer: A COVID-19 infection can also cause severe and difficult consequential and long-term damage, some of which only occur a long time after the corona infection has been overcome.

The rehab clinics are full of such cases, which show how dramatic and insidious the virus is.

The Freisinger Tagblatt would like to shed some light on the subject, also to do educational work and to encourage people.

He found out that he was infected with COVID 19 when he was woken from a coma in Freising.

Braun can only guess where he got infected: Most likely it happened during the carnival parade in Nandlstadt or on his birthday on March 1st, 2020, when he visited the fasting market.

Rainer Braun weighed 98 kilograms at the time, and lost 25 kilograms during the phase when it was on the brink and in the hospital.

“But I've made up for that in the meantime,” says Braun.

Rainer Braun not only survived Covid

“Just fight,” was and is his motto.

And not for the first time.

In November 2014, a malignant tumor in his lungs was removed, and in June 2015 a benign tumor in his pancreas was removed.

Corona deniers or those who say that COVID 19 is nothing more than the flu, replied Braun: "I do not wish you what I went through.

But I'll be happy to tell you. ”And when he does that,“ then they'll be calmer, ”is his experience.

The same applies to vaccination.

He would definitely get vaccinated - only the Russian and English vaccines are more hostile to him.

Was he immune to Corona?

At the beginning of February he had an antibody test done.

The result: Compared to the same test in September last year, his antibodies have decreased significantly.

He has to be careful again so as not to get infected again.

The fight continues for Rainer Braun there too.

The STIKO recommends only vaccinating people over the age of 60 with Astrazeneca.

What should younger first vaccinated people do now?

A doctor mentions three scenarios.

The vaccination center in Freising is getting support: Now the practices are also vaccinating against Corona.

The doctor's spokesman has two messages for all those who want to be vaccinated.

In an urgent action, the fire brigade, THW, BRK and Johanniter have created a temporary vaccination center in Zolling.

Otherwise valuable vaccine would have had to be thrown away.
